Sprucing up SA Grounds on Sun., April 22 |
Dear Parents of Salisbury Academy:
SA's annual Spring Spruce-Up Day is an event that we look forward to each year and an opportunity to show our community spirit and appreciation for our school grounds.
This year's Spruce-Up will take place on Sunday, April 22 from 1 to 4 p.m. Come for all or part of the afternoon and get a little dirty while having some outdoor fun! Key focuses will be weeding, cleaning, and making small fixes to the outdoor classroom and garden beds, along with enhancing our campus through the addition of potted plants.
If you are able, please bring your own garden gloves, small garden tools, and shovels.
Thank you to our PSA for holding this event! Please reach out to staff liason to the PSA,
Shannon McCoy, if you have questions or would like to join us for this afternoon as a school community.
Sincerely,
Beverly Fowler, Head of School

The How and Why of Music: Students Present on Music History
|
|
|
|
Gavin McDaniel presents on the native music of Australia. |
|
Music Director Dr. Rob shares:
Over the last two weeks, middle school students finished their third quarter research projects for music class. After much hard work, the fruits of this year's labor were indeed a bountiful harvest. I was extremely pleased with the overall quality represented within a rich variety of topics. From jazz, African-American spirituals, and Broadway to composers and performers such as Lizst, Beethoven, and Louis Armstrong, a vast array of information seemed to burst forth!
Performing is like getting to fly an airplane, but I believe in students learning the history of the airplane and what keeps it aloft. By this I mean that students should also possess an adequate knowledge of music theory and history. After two years of utilizing the traditional teaching practice of lectures, worksheets, and such, I felt that I needed to go in a direction more suited to the type of learning on which Salisbury Academy students thrive. Within my music classes, I have found self-directed research using technology within a collaboratively-based learning environment to be a winning combination. The students really approach the topics with much enthusiasm, and I no longer feel like I am having to force-feed a captive audience. Instead, with proper guidance, the students have much educational freedom and creativity motivating them to feed themselves. And the confidence they build by presenting their findings to each other in class is the "icing on the cake."
In completing these projects, students may work solo or work with in partnership with other students. Students choose their topics from a list of topics derived from required learning in the Core Knowledge curriculum of their respective grade levels. Then, they select the format in which to do their topics, choosing from writing a research paper, constructing a Google slide presentation, or composing a newspaper article. I can proudly share that it's not only the students learning from this. They've managed to dig up some obscure facts about their topics that I've never encountered...and that was quite fun for me.
