Experiential Learning at SA
Dear Salisbury Academy Families:

What an exciting week around Salisbury Academy with the Rainforest Cafe, overnight field trips to Camp Thunderbird, the NC coast, and Charleston, SC, and a Battle of the Books championship.

All of these wonderful learning experiences are examples of what makes the Salisbury Academy experience so special as students make important connections outside of the classroom to extend their learning. Thank you to the teachers and parent chaperones who gave their time this week to make this all possible.

Sincerely,

Beverly Fowler, Head of School

Student-Led Battery Collection Initiative
First grade students make the "Recycling batteries is rad!" sign with their seventh grade presenters.
Coming soon to Salisbury Academy is a battery disposal program! After discussing soil and ground water in a recent science unit, Mrs. Shadroui's seventh grade students uncovered the dangers of battery toxins leeching into ground and water resources. Upon further research, students learned that if batteries are disposed of properly the negative environmental impact can be largely avoided.

"We were just talking one day and realized how none of us were properly disposing of our batteries," said student Will Webb. "We decided that that needed to change."
Putting their thoughts into the action, students drew up plans for a school battery disposal program. Two containers have been ordered - one for household batteries and one for rechargeable batteries - and collection will begin by mid-May.

To raise awareness and stir up enthusiasm for the new program, seventh-graders visited the other classes at Salisbury Academy to promote proper battery disposal and motivate the school community to take part.

The mission is clear for these seventh-graders and the motivation is strong. As shared by student Wade Robins: "We're doing this to help the environment and make our future cleaner."
