Second Grade Teacher Mrs. Mary Lou Williams shares:
Second-graders concluded their study of simple machines by experimenting with inclined planes, pulleys, and wheels and axles at a visit from Discovery Place Reach. During the visit, the class also learned the differences between first, second, and third class levers.
Over the past several weeks, second grade students studied examples of each machine and also learned about compound machines. In their guided reading time, the class read books about simple machines and explored the ways they are used in our everyday world. They also found examples around the school: the inclined plane leading to the music cottage, the pulleys on the blinds in the classroom, the wedge that holds the gym door open, and the wheel and axle that make the doorknob work. As we discovered, simple machines are all around us!
