Second grade students made their first food delivery of the year to Communities in Schools at Isenberg Elementary this week. Several weeks ago, Bonnie Harrell of Communities in Schools presented to the students and shared just how meaningful these contributions are to food-insecure families in our area.

Wishing our SA Families a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
Dear Salisbury Academy Families,

The excitement is building as we draw closer to Christmas break. There is something just magical about working at a school and being around the joy and wonder of students at this time of year.

Our students are involved with a wide range of community activities and events this season. Some of the highlights include: preparing for the upcoming Christmas Extravaganza show, participating in decorating a tree for the Arc Festival of Trees, planning for the annual Rowan Vocational Opportunities party, caroling at area retirement communities, reading with residents at Trinity Living Center, and spreading cheer to our community through service. Such a wide range of events is not possible without the commitment and time of staff and the support of parents. Thank you for all that you do to support our students and these causes!

On behalf of everyone at Salisbury Academy, I would like to wish everyone a wonderful Christmas holiday and offer the very best wishes for a successful and happy 2018!

Please look for your next Jag Weekly on Sunday, December 31.

Sincerely,

Beverly Fowler, Head of School

Learning in the Garden: Kindergarten CKLA unit inspires planting day
SA's kindergarten team shares:

Our kindergarten CKLA unit for this month is plants. Students and teachers have been discussing the basic needs of plants and labeling the parts of plants in addition to understanding pollination and how plants germinate. Our guest speaker, Nye Hartwick, joined our class on Tuesday to teach the students about the importance of bees in the life of plants. Mrs. Hartwick is a beekeeper.

Our class has created a garden area on the kindergarten playground. In preparation for our "Planting Party" on Wednesday, students cultivated the garden by raking, weeding, and adding healthy soil. Students planted pansies and ornamental cabbages in the garden with the help of parents and grandparents.

"What an awesome learning experience!," says Mrs. Bailey. "We look forward to watching the pansies and ornamental cabbages grow."
Mrs. Bailey and kindergarten students display a beehive frame after a presentation by SA parent and beekeeper Mrs. Nye Hartwick.
