Delving into ADHD: SA lunch & learn

Dear Salisbury Academy Parents,

ADHD is an increasingly common factor in today's learning landscape and brings with it many questions. Join us on Friday, February 3 from 12 to 1 p.m. for a lunch and learn with psychologists Dr. William Sloan and Dr. Marissa Griggs.

Drs. Sloan and Griggs will answer questions including:
  • What is ADHD exactly and what should parents look for in their children? Are there other reasons a child might be struggling that should be considered (ex.: anxiety, learning disorder, etc.)?
  • What causes ADHD?
  • What are the primary treatments for ADHD? Why are medications often used and how do they help?
  • How does ADHD impact school performance?
  • What strategies can help students overcome some of the primary challenges in executive functioning that they face, including how to optimally structure a child's environment as well as build in and reinforce new skills?
Attendees are welcome to bring a lunch to the event. Looking forward to an enlightening hour with our SA community!

Sincerely,

Beverly Fowler, Head of School

Jack Wear Moves onto Science Fair Regionals
Fifth-grader Jack Wear has made some exciting discoveries in the past two months. With the help of his grandmother Lisa Wear, Director of Horizons Unlimited Science and Technology Center for the Rowan-Salisbury School System, Jack executed an experiment using duckweed to filter contaminants in water.

A surface plant found in still bodies of fresh water, duckweed is being examined today as a potential clean energy source as well as a bioremediator for filtering contaminants from water. To explore the aquatic plant's filtering properties, Jack mixed a statin drug into 5 bioremediation chambers. This mixing increased the pH levels of the water. Jack then proceeded to add different amounts of duckweed into the chambers (with one chamber being the control group with no duckweed). Over 3 weeks, Jack determined that the chambers with higher amounts of duckweed were most successful in filtering out the contaminants and bringing the pH back to the desired level of 7.0.

"Scientific process skills, developed through innovative projects, benefit both the participant and the public," shares SA science teacher Alexandra Shadroui. "Science projects like Jack's tackle today's environmental issues with a fresh perspective and offer much-needed research and data collection to help create solutions."

Congrats and good luck to Jack as he moves onto the UNC Charlotte Region 6 NC Science & Engineering Fair on February 18!

The Green Space

Did you know:

The U.S. is the #1 trash-producing country in the world at 1,609 pounds per person per year. This means that 5% of the world's people generate 40% of the world's waste. We toss out two billion plastic razors, a million and a half tons of paper towels, and 12 billion disposable diapers annually.
