Guiding Our Children in Becoming Screenwise: Devorah Heitner presentation, Thurs., Feb. 8
Dear Salisbury Academy Families:

For today's generation of moms and dads who are parenting in the digital world, it can feel like technology is changing at the speed of light. How do we stay informed and equipped to guide our students to navigate this world?   Salisbury Academy is excited to partner with Devorah Heitner, author of Screenwise, on this important topic that will empower parents to help kids survive and thrive in the world they are growing up in.  We invite you to join us on Thursday, February 8 at 6:30 p.m. for an interactive presentation on this topic

Devorah offers an encouraging perspective on how to thoughtfully guide kids in the digital age.  Many parents and educators worry that kids are addicted, detached, or distracted because of their digital devices. Digital citizenship expert Devorah Heitner, however, believes that technology offers huge potential to our children - if parents help them.

Screenwise  helps parents recognize that the social wisdom they have gained throughout their lives is a relevant and urgently needed supplement to their kids' digital savvy. These skills can help set kids up for a lifetime of success in a world fueled by technology. The core message of the book is that kids need mentoring, not (just) monitoring about growing up in the digital age. Texting, gaming, and social media are social spaces requiring social skills.  The book offers advice on helping kids navigate friendship and identity issues that are common among new texters, gamers, and social media users.

We look forward to growing and learning on this important topic with our school community.

Sincerely,

Beverly Fowler, Head of School

Alumni Night Brings Crowd, Laughs, and a Stroll Down Memory Lane
SA's gymnasium was filled with laughter and memories at the annual SA Alumni Basketball Game on Thursday evening. Alumni from graduating classes as far back as 2011 and as recent as last year's grads convened for a night of catching up and a light-hearted game of basketball.

Following the girls and boys varsity games, alumni played against themselves and against current eighth grade students in four entertaining quarters of basketball. In the stands, alumni parents chatted and caught up with one another as alumni students shared updates and cheered on their fellow grads on the court.

SA faculty and staff take great joy in supporting our alumni on the next steps of their educational and professional journeys. Whether they attended Salisbury Academy for one year or ten, our Jaguar alumni always have a home at Salisbury Academy!

Middle School Matters

"We spend January 1st walking through our lives... drawing up a list of work to be done... Maybe this year, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives...not looking for flaws, but for potential."
