Strong Character and Kindness Don't Go Unnoticed
Dear Salisbury Academy Families:

Wow! What a great week in the life of our school. While I am always proud of the academic activities that occur in our classrooms, this week was especially full of positive comments about our students' character. I wanted to take a moment and share a couple of specific phone calls this week that were a wonderful reminder of the culture we have at our school:

During a field trip to Kluttz Piano Company as part of the middle school music exploratory, our students enjoyed a quick lunch out at a local restaurant. Within moments after the students departed the establishment, the restaurant manager called our school to share that our students were the most well behaved and respectful students that she had ever encountered. She commented how they made eye contact and showed patience and appreciation to not only each other but also to everyone in the restaurant.

Another of the special calls came from a first grade parent. This parent reached out to express appreciation for a positive note that her child's eighth grade buddy sent congratulating them on a job well done during their readers theatre event.

And just yesterday, our elementary students competed at Providence Day School in Charlotte in the Elementary Battle of the Books competition. We received multiple phone calls and emails from other schools and parents who wanted to acknowledge the positive behavior of our students. We are so proud of their third place finish, but we are even more proud of how well they represented our school. They were gracious and kind to the winning team and made us proud with their confidence and teamwork.

Those positive phone calls were an affirmation to our team that the work our families and teachers partner together in, encouraging and developing strong character in our students, is noticed and appreciated both in our school and beyond. I felt like a proud "mom" this week and just had to share with our parents to give you a slice of the everyday kindness that occurs at Salisbury Academy.

Sincerely,

Beverly Fowler, Head of School

Kindergarten's Environmental Inquiry: Instilling passion for the outdoors
Kindergarten teacher Jan Ketner shares:

Environmental lessons and outdoor inquiry are a key component to learning in the Salisbury Academy kindergarten. Students have learned ways to take care of our Earth and how to be better stewards of the environment. This year they've participated in wide range of environmental activities such as turning recyclables into art sculptures, gardening, a scavenger hunt to locate natural resources, and brushing our teeth with the water turned off to demonstrate conservation.  Students have learned the importance of the three R's: reduce, reuse, and recycle, and to conserve resources and reduce pollution. As a result, our students are turning off lights in rooms when not in use, using less paper towels and cleaning up litter. The class is full of young environmentalists, and it's beautiful to see!

Pictured above and below: This week's kindergarten outdoor science inquiry was all about trees! Students explored school grounds and charted the numbers of trees with no leaves, brown leaves, green leaves, and blossoms. They also noted harmful living and nonliving variables in the natural space.
