A Celebratory Night at Bloom
Dear Salisbury Academy Families:

The Bloom in Celebration 25th anniversary gala was a fantastic and memorable evening! In addition to successfully raising funds for important causes in our school and larger community, the night served as a wonderful setting for our alumni parents and students, current parents, and community supporters to reflect on our school's rich history and celebrate the enduring and vibrant SA culture and mission.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of so many, including Bloom hosts, attendees, and auction supporters, our 9th annual gala raised funds to support the scholarship and operating budget for Salisbury Academy and our local community partnerships.  We are so pleased to announce that our Fund-A-Need raised over $30,000 for the completion of our Outdoor Learning and Play Space!

I'd like to say a big thank you to the group of individuals who have worked this entire year to make Bloom possible. Thank you to our steering committee: chair and SA alumna Taylor Sexton Durham, and committee members Brooks Busby, Andrea Davis, Meg Dees, Kelly Goodman, Traci Williams, and Cheryl van der Poel. Additionally, we want to thank the group that worked hard to provide an exciting live auction: chair Traci Williams and committee members Andrea Davis, Meg Dees, Kelly Goodman, and Alice Rich.

Sincerely,

Beverly Fowler, Head of School

JK Plant Study: Fruitful opportunities for hands-on learning
Junior Kindergarten Teacher Mrs. Sandy Jordan shares:

During our study of plants, the Junior Kindergarten students are experiencing many opportunities for hands-on learning. As part of our study, we've opened a farm stand in our classroom. To start this project, the class spent a morning doing research at Father and Son Produce. We came back to class and made a list of supplies and materials we would need to create our own farmers market. After gathering the supplies and materials, the children got to work organizing, sorting, and pricing produce.

After opening the farmers market, the children decided we needed a garden to grow our produce and supply our farmers market. This time, we used books and pictures to research what we would need. We made a list of supplies and got started, and we now have a beautiful vegetable garden and orchard with a very elaborate irrigation system.

During this activity the children are using and reinforcing so many skills. They are using reading and writing skills as they make signs, label bins and decorate seed packets. They are using math skills as they measure in the garden, price the produce and count out money to purchase fruits and vegetables. They are also learning about the parts of a plant and the basic needs of a plant.

It is so rewarding to see these children use their imagination as they think about, plan and create for this project. This is truly how children learn best!
