Students in lower school were thrilled to experiment with Dr. Rob's theremin this week! Invented in the early twentieth century by its namesake, a Russian scientist named Leon Theremin, the theremin's changes in sound occur when the electrical field a person gives off interferes with the electrical field of the instrument

Supporting SA through Bloom Industrial
Dear Salisbury Academy Families:

In just two weeks, Salisbury Academy will host our 8th annual Bloom Gala at the NC Transportation Museum.  This festive evening will include a cocktail hour with jazz music, gourmet food, exciting live auction, and dancing to the tunes of The Band Punch. Bloom also provides our school with the opportunity to invite the greater community to join us and support our many efforts with our own students and efforts in the community. Many of our guests will be alumni families, generous Corporate Partners, Bloom hosts, and friends of Salisbury Academy who believe in the mission of our school. It is an amazing night that offers fun and fellowship.

The deadline to RSVP is Monday, March 6. We invite you to join us and other Salisbury Academy families for a night that will support our students and our active community service outreach. Prevent Child Abuse Rowan is our featured community partner. Bloom also supports the Broyhill student leadership conference for all local area high school students.

Each year as part of our live auction, Salisbury Academy offers a Fund-A-Need auction item that goes directly to enhance our school. This year, we are excited to reveal that we will be raising funds to help us purchase a state-of-the-art, expansive play structure to use in our future outdoor learning and play area. A generous, anonymous donor has given the school a gift of $50,000 to match at Bloom on March 18. This matching gift will allow us to secure the funding needed to make this happen.

I hope you will get your paddles ready to raise in support of this exciting opportunity. Our Bloom e-communication this week will feature more about this item and the MANY exciting live auction items that will be available this year.  You don't want to miss this evening!

Regards,

Beverly Fowler, Head of School

Reading Specialist Mrs. Brown shares:

Salisbury Academy's Battle of the Books and Elementary Battle of the Books teams are eager and prepared for next week's regional competition of independent schools. Battle of the Books is a reading incentive program designed to encourage students to read and discuss quality literature. The fun and excitement of the Battle of the Books competition helps students improve reading skills, mature in their choice of reading materials, build vocabulary, and acquire a broader knowledge base. The goal of the competition is to READ!

The BOB coaches are Pat Foley and Heather Coulter. The Salisbury Academy BOB team will compete against St. Marks Catholic School, Westchester Academy, and St. Raphael's Catholic School.

The Elementary Battle of the Books (EBOB) team consists of 12 members in grades 3-4.  Team members were required to read 15 books from the EBOB book list to qualify for participation in the regional competition. Learning about Probiotics and the Immune System

Sixth grade welcomed Dr. Nagy on Monday as part of their exploration of the immune system. He demonstrated the process of fermentation and the health benefits of probiotics by eating foods like sauerkraut and kefir.

Students were able to sample his kefir and ask questions about keeping their immune systems healthy and ready to fight off germs. Dr. Nagy left behind the starter for a class kefir which students will use to create healthy, tasty recipes.
