A Passion for Service: SA students begin their holiday outreach efforts
Dear Salisbury Academy Families,

In a school community that is already passionate about service, the holidays bring with them even more opportunities for our students to give back to their community.

The fifth grade is making ornaments in preparation for their participation in the Arc of Rowan's Festival of Trees, and Dr. Rob and lower school students will be making the rounds to area retirement communities to serenade residents with holiday music. Both sixth and first grades will enjoy holiday programs with Trinity Living Center, with first-graders reading holiday books to participants at their monthly visit in December and sixth-graders assisting in an Alzheimer's and dementia awareness book reading in the new year.

Among these and other holiday outreach efforts is one more that is near and dear to our hearts: the Rowan Vocational Opportunities Christmas party, led by SA's middle school students.  RVO provides employment, education, therapy, friendship, and many other services for adults with mental disabilities. Through our annual Christmas party, SA students supply RVO with much-needed items while bringing great joy and cheer to the RVO participants. Please review the RVO section below to see how you can contribute to this meaningful cause.

Our students' passion for service is inspiring and contagious, and we couldn't be more proud of these young stewards of the community!

Sincerely,

Beverly Fowler, Head of School

Second quarter middle school exploratories have begun and support a wide range of student interests and curiosities! Exploratory classes run each Thursday for 45 minutes.

Students in fifth grade are participating in social leadership programs designed by acclaimed education consultant and author Michelle Icard: "Hero's Pursuit" for the male students and "Athena's Path" for the female students.

Students in sixth through eighth grades have their choice between Battle of the Books; North Carolina History and Legends; Game Day; and Competitions, an opportunity for students who are interested in any competition (science fair, essay contest, spelling bee, etc.) to study and have support.

In the Game Day exploratory, students have the opportunity to try a variety of games and have kicked things off with the fun game of Frisbee golf. The Frisbee golf set was given to Salisbury Academy by the class of 2017 along with the Jaguar basketball goal pads that can be seen on the Outdoor Learning Space playground.

Salisbury Academy Christmas Happiness Party:
Donations for Rowan Vocational Opportunities
SA's commitment to Rowan Vocational Opportunities (RVO) and our Christmas Party with the RVO clients have become tradition; these individuals are truly grateful, and this organization is so deserving of our support.

RVO provides employment, education, therapy, friendship, and many other services for adults with mental disabilities.

The middle school students will help to plan the event and organize collected items. Seventh and eighth graders will take the party and donations to RVO on Thursday, December 14.

We are asking for your help with the following:
  • Toiletries (toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, hand sanitizer, disposable women's and men's razors, Q-tips, Chapstick, lotion and hand cream, cosmetic and vanity kits, shampoo and conditioner, shower gel, bar soap, tissues, perfume/cologne)
  • Combs and brushes
  • Men's and women's sweatshirts and sweatpants (medium to 5XL)
  • Thermal tops and bottoms (medium to 5XL)
  • Men's crew-neck and V-neck t-shirts (large to 5XL)
  • New or gently-used men's (or unisex) coats, jackets, and sweaters (all sizes)
  • Gloves, scarves, hats, toboggans
  • Construction paper, art supplies, and craft kits
  • Adult-sized Santa hats (These are a big hit at our party.  We use them as "prizes," and it is always great when there are enough to go around.
  • microwaves
These items will be collected in the homeroom classrooms and can be dropped off with Mrs. Coulter at any time.  Monetary donations are also greatly appreciated and will be used by Mrs. Coulter to purchase priority items. Please contact Mrs. Coulter with any questions.

*Please send all items by Monday, December 11.
