From the Desk of Mrs. Goodman
Dear Salisbury Academy Families,

My time at Salisbury Academy began seven years ago as an assistant to Mrs. Williams in the second grade. Since then, I have had the opportunity to teach each of the middle school grades and all core disciplines. My new role as the Division Director of the Middle School is yet another opportunity for me to deepen my relationships with our students and their families.

When I tell someone that I teach middle school, their typical response is to cringe. This age group often gets a bad rap. Can they be chatty at times? Yes! A little moody here and there? Of course! It goes with the territory; to spend extensive time with this age group, however, is to delve into so much more than those stereotypes. The truth is, I spend my days with dynamic, intelligent, and engaging students. I love my job!

I keep a quote from United States Navy Rear Admiral Grace Hopper posted in my office. It reads, "A ship in a port is safe, but that's not what ships are built for." I keep this posted as a reminder of our greatest responsibility in the Middle School. We are preparing our students to go into the world as independent, constructive citizens and leaders. We do this, in part, by immersing them in the Core Knowledge curriculum and preparing them for their academic journey.

In addition to academics, and perhaps more importantly, we focus on the development of our students' character. We strive for our students to develop empathy for others, make kindness a priority, and demonstrate an attitude of respect in all that they do. In these ever-changing times, it is our belief that we are sending little beacons of light out into the world. This is my supreme hope for our students. I look forward to continuing this journey together.

Sincerely,

Jessica Goodman, Middle School Division Director

A Celebration of Giving: JK/K giving parties
The greatest gifts are those you give, and nobody knows this better than SA's JK/K students and staff. At their first giving party of the year on Thursday of this week, the JK/K classes honored the students who have birthdays this quarter by contributing canned goods for Rowan Helping Ministries that were wrapped in gift paper. Students with birthdays this quarter had the utter joy of unwrapping the canned goods while knowing that they will go to people who very much need them.

At the giving party JK/K students also created bean soup mixes for families in need, made crafts, and listened to the story of a community pulling its resources together called Stone Soup. All in all the party was a huge success and a whole lot of fun!

At each quarterly giving party the JK/K class will collect items for a different cause or charity. Stay tuned this year for more updates on the big community impact that these little learners are capable of!
