Friday's fall pep rally was full of energy and laughter. Fall athletes were recognized and a ceremony honoring eighth grade fall athletes was made all the more special by the signs and cheers from the audience of students, faculty, and staff. See below for an athletics update from Athletic Director Tommy Wilson.

Mrs. Brown's Journey
Dear Salisbury Academy Families,

My adventures at Salisbury Academy began in 1996 as a first grade teacher. At the time, my own children were Salisbury Academy students. Learning the content-rich topics of the Core Knowledge curriculum filled my own children with excitement, curiosity, and wonder. They enjoyed learning through reading, discussions, and hands-on learning experiences.
We spent many nights surfing the internet for more information about topics they had discussed in school. The Core Knowledge curriculum intrigued me.

While teaching at Salisbury Academy, I began to seek research-based teaching methods and an understanding of the developmental stages of children in order to meet all student strengths and struggles. Lifelong learning became a passion for me.

In 2001, I left Salisbury Academy to begin work on a Master's Degree in reading, language, and literacy education. My 32 years of research, teaching, and tutoring experiences have lead me to achieve a current Orton Gillingham Comprehensive Certification, Irlens screener certification, training to administer the Gesell Developmental Observation and Woodcock Johnson Academic Achievement Assessment.

I now perceive that there is no one method of instruction that is likely to work for all children. Children's development, learning styles, and cultural backgrounds vary, so instructional strategies must also vary.

I returned to Salisbury Academy as a first grade teacher in 2009. I have worked with teachers, parents, and students in grades Junior Kindergarten through eighth grade as teacher, tutor, literacy coach, Elementary Battle of the Books coach, and admissions testing administrator. I have sought to support children through multisensory lessons and activities that are purposeful, authentic, and use their learning strengths to build academic literacy weaknesses.

One of my favorite places to spend my day is in the kindergarten building. Observing our youngest students at play, approaching each task with exhilaration and wonder, fills my soul with pride and happiness. One of my favorite sayings is

"Play gives children a chance to practice what they are learning."
          - Mr. Rogers

Sharing daily "play" discoveries and accomplishments with preschool parents is the highlight of my day! In my new position as Early Childhood Division Director, I will support and assist our junior kindergarten and kindergarten teachers in developing the  emotional, social, physical, and academic growth of our preschool students.  After all, developing students' love of learning is achieved by spending time playing with them!

Thank you for sharing your children with us. I look forward to observing and encouraging your children as they grow!

Sincerely,

Melissa Brown, Early Education Division Director

A Successful Fall Sports Season: An update from the Athletic Director
Coach Wilson Shares:

The Jaguars are wrapping up another successful fall sports season. On October 23 and 24 the soccer team will compete for the WCCAA conference title. The Jaguars have clinched home field advantage with their undefeated conference record.

On October 27, the boys and girls cross country team will compete for their conference title. The boys team is looking for their third consecutive conference title and the girls are looking for their second title in three years.

Varsity volleyball wrapped up their season Friday with a win versus Tabernacle Christian School. The girls finished the season with a record of 7 wins and 9 losses. The JV soccer team had a successful season with a record of 6 wins and 1 loss. The JV Volleyball team improved so much as the season went along facing some very tough competition.

I would like to thank all of the coaches for their hard work this season getting our teams ready to compete. Heartfelt thanks goes to all of our Booster Club volunteers as well for all of their time taking admissions and working the concession stands. Please join us for our next Booster Club meeting on October 27th at 8:05.
