Lucas Peffer pets a baby kangaroo at Zootastic's visit to third and fifth grades earlier this week. Both grades are studying animal classification and were able to build upon their knowledge while discussing, seeing, and touching real life examples of mammals, reptiles, and birds.

From the Desk of Mrs. Anderson
Dear Salisbury Academy Families,

When I was in the fourth grade, I had to memorize a poem every month as part of a yearlong poetry unit. One of my favorite poets is Robert Frost.  My favorite poem by him is "The Road Not Taken."  I love the last three lines,

"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference."

My educational journey has led me down not one, but many roads, and for that, I am grateful.

For the last 16 years, I've had the opportunity to teach in five states. I worked with amazing principals and teachers. Yet as great as those years were, I always felt that there was something missing. I always wished I could take all of the positive things I experienced at 5 different schools and put them into one school.  At Salisbury Academy, that wish is coming true.

I wear many hats in my new position. My two sons, Benji and Penn, attend 3rd grade and JK here at Salisbury Academy. I am at ease knowing that they are engaged in a challenging and enriching curriculum that not only includes the classroom, but also their community, faith, and character.

While children here are loved and nurtured, they are also taught to be responsible for solving their own problems. A positive learning environment is crucial to our children's success. As I walk into classrooms, I see children smiling, hear laughter, and see active engagement. I know our children are on the path to becoming lifelong learners.

As a teacher to your child, I promise to help your child recognize his or her special gifts and talents. At Salisbury Academy we allow children to be imaginative and provide them with challenging activities to ensure their understanding of topics. The Core Knowledge Sequence and the new CKLA curriculum ensures cultural literacy and sets the stage to your child becoming a global and enriched learner.

Finally, as the Lower School Division Director, I promise to continue instilling in every child Salisbury Academy's mission and purpose. Students here are all well rounded contributors. Through our rigorous curriculum, community outreach, monthly character virtues, and spiritual development, students at Salisbury Academy leave ready to achieve their hopes and dreams.

For me, these roads of teaching, working closely with students, communicating with parents, building community relationships, and becoming a division director have helped pave the way for me to become the educator that I want to be. I truly love what I do and love coming to work every day. For me, these "roads" have made all the difference.

Thank you again for your warm welcome and support.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Anderson, Lower School Division Director

Ancient Art Alive: First grade cave murals
Students in the first grade are learning about petroglyphs in art class as a lead-in to an upcoming CKLA unit on ancient civilizations. Through the art unit students are learning how symbols and pictures were used to communicate long before formal languages and alphabets. They're also picking up some fun facts, such as how ancient people signed their cave art with a handprint.

Using oil crayons and tempera paints on a large sheet of paper that resembles a cave wall, students are creating their own symbols while incorporating symbols that have been found in cave paintings and murals around the world.

The cave art is an engaging foundation for students as they prepare to enter their unit on ancient civilizations, art teacher Molly Shelton shares. "It also gives them a chance to work with new materials which is a big part of my role as art teacher - exposing children to different materials and letting them discover how those materials can be used in different ways," Shelton says.

Outdoor Learning Space Update
Dear Salisbury Academy Families,

After meeting with Salisbury Academy's landscape contractors this week, we are pleased to share that the Outdoor Learning Space is scheduled to be complete by October 20. Features to be completed as part of Phase One include the Older Children's Play Area, Entry Courtyard, Global Motion, Dry Creek Bed, Outdoor Classroom, Music Garden, Hillside Chute, Jag Den, and Half Court.

We couldn't be more excited to see the children enjoy these wonderful features in just a few short weeks. Mrs. Fowler has promised an extended recess on the day that the playground opens so that students have extra time to enjoy their new space!

As we come to the completion of Phase One this month, we are already looking ahead to begin our fundraising efforts and work on Phase Two. Phase Two of the Outdoor Learning Space will restore and beautify the grounds as well as complete features including the Amphitheater, Gardening Center, Bird Watching Area, and Butterfly Garden. Major construction in this area will take place summer of 2018.

Thank you to our Salisbury Academy families for your patience as we complete Phase One! Please feel free to contact Beverly Fowler or Tracey Baird with questions about the project or the naming opportunities for Phase Two.
