Mrs. Coulter's Corner: Her Educational Journey and Salisbury Academy
My educational journey at Salisbury Academy began over twenty years ago with Georgi Goss introducing me to the school and to Core Knowledge. Since that first introduction, I have taught students from grades two through eight and all grades and subjects in between. My own children attended SA from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade, graduates in 2008 and 2014. I have served in roles as lead teacher, directors of both lower and middle divisions, and now Director of Curriculum and Instruction.

I have always been deeply inspired by the Core Knowledge Curriculum and by the design and innovation that lie at the heart of Salisbury Academy.  It makes me so proud to work at a school that has recognized the value of Core Knowledge and has used it as the foundation for our curriculum since the school opened its doors and which has added meaningfully and creatively to this base curricular foundation with the focus solely on student-centered learning.

"Putting the puzzle together" and working to ensure the future of Salisbury Academy and its continuance as a premier institution are what keep me engaged and jumping out of the bed each morning.

Changing roles in the 2016-2017 school year gave me the opportunity to deeply examine Core Knowledge in SA with a new perspective. It also gave me the opportunity to research the Core Knowledge Foundation and its current recommendations and updates.

The curriculum changes made already for 2017-2018 are very exciting. The teachers in grades JK-5 are all implementing an updated "Knowledge" strand of the curriculum "which uses rich, engaging read alouds and history and social studies content to build topic interest, background knowledge, and vocabulary."  In grades 3-5, the language arts components are fully integrated and represent all LA content, being presented in a systematic, engaging fashion and continuing to build from year to year.

Working one-on-one with teachers as they plan, visiting classrooms to witness the excitement of the students and the pride and confidence of the teachers, and observing the students truly engaged - all of these experiences show that SA is only growing stronger and more relevant each day.

Social Leadership Exploratories: Grades 6 through 8
Kate Burton and Quinn Davidson share in a breakout chat.
Middle School Division Director Jessica Goodman shares:

This quarter, the middle school students in grades 6 through 8 are participating in Athena's Path (for girls) and Hero's Pursuit (for boys). These social leadership courses are designed by Michelle Icard, author of Michelle in the Middle

Each week, students divide by grade and gender to meet with their group leader and focus on a variety of topics. Through discussion and games, students are developing empathy for others, becoming more aware of how their words may affect their peers, and focusing on being the person they truly want to be. We encourage you to discuss these lessons at home, as we are already seeing positive results in and around the school.

This week's exercises included a variety of questions discussed both as a group and in pairs to help students hone their leadership skills, with a focus on topics including empathy, thoughtfulness, and awareness of others.
Mrs. Fowler leads a discussion with the eighth grade girls.
Coach Wilson and Mrs. Coulter lead a round table discussion with the seventh and eighth grade boys.

Maximizing Your Child's Academic Performance: Sept. 27 lunch and learn

Maximizing Your Child's Academic Performance

Lunch and Learn with Heidi Tringali

Wednesday, Sept. 27
12 - 1 p.m.

For many parents, the academic goal for our children is that they will perform to their fullest potential. As parents, we do many things to make sure our children are able to give their best effort in school. We make sure they get enough sleep, make sure they are well nourished and do their homework, and make sure they arrive to school with the supplies they need.

Yet even with all of our efforts, more and more children are performing below their potential or are showing signs of not being ready to learn. During this lunch and learn, Heidi Tringali will share about what learning readiness looks like and what we are doing here at Salisbury Academy to maximize our children's academic performance.

Lunch Menus
