"Deck the Halls" 2012
Jan Williams at work
Jan Williams

Join Jan Williams and the James Monroe Museum on Saturday, December 1 for this popular annual holiday decorating presentation, which has been a mainstay of Fredericksburg's holiday preparations for more than 30 years. Williams, owner of Jan Williams Florals, will demonstrate how to create elegant seasonal arrangements that will bring the beauty of the holidays into your home. Your purchase of a ticket enters you in a lottery to win one of Jan's creations!

The program will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon in Dodd Auditorium in George Washington Hall on the University of Mary Washington's Fredericksburg campus. We'll serve a breakfast of seasonal breads and pastries. Registration is required; tickets are $25/person ($22 for Friends of the James Monroe Museum). Call the museum at 540/654-1043 to register.

"A Monroe Christmas" Holiday Open House

Our annual holiday Open House will be held on Saturday, December 1, from 4 to 6 p.m. Join us for cider and cookies and to view the special mini-exhibit "A Monroe Christmas," which shows how holidays were celebrated during Monroe's time. President Monroe will be on hand to greet you, and you'll also hear carols played on Eliza Monroe's Astor pianoforte and on the harp. We hope to see you then!

Last week, JMM received a generous donation of $4,000 from the Stewart Jones Charitable Trust. This donation will be used in part to support next year's public programs. We are grateful to trustee Russell Roberts for this gift!

Read about this donation and the late Dr. Jones here.

Membership Appeal

JMM Logo2012 marks the 85th anniversary of the museum's founding and has already seen two exciting developments: the acquisition of a document representing the earliest-known example of James Monroe's signature, and the important loan of the Rembrandt Peale portrait of Monroe to the Virginia Governor's Mansion.

In recognition of this milestone year, we are running a special membership appeal. We are asking each member of the Friends of the James Monroe Museum to recruit at least one new member. As a thank-you, old and new members will be invited to a special reception with the UMW Board of Visitors this spring.

We hope you will help us grow our museum family and make 2012 a banner year!

The James Monroe Museum and Memorial Library, located in historic downtown Fredericksburg, Virginia, is the largest repository in the country for artifacts and documents related to the fifth president of the United States. The museum was first opened in 1927 by Monroe descendants as a place to house their own personal collections, which had been handed down through generations of the family. Eventually, the museum and its extensive collections were turned over to the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the museum is now administered by the University of Mary Washington.

The museum belongs to the American Association of Museums, the American Association for State and Local History, and the Virginia Association of Museums. It is also on the National Register of Historic Places and is a National Historic Landmark.
