Meet Cory Remillard
Jamie Staton's Mile 15 Virtual Running Partner

John Remillard's recollection of his son's first Special Olympics competition is as vivid today as it was nine years ago immediately after it happened.

John "Cory" Remillard of Derry was only 16-years-old, weighing no more than 100 pounds participating in his first 40-yard dash at West Point Academy in New York.

It took Cory Remillard a little longer than the other runners to get going after being startled by the starting gun and jumping into the arms of the cadet assisting him at the start, but once he took off, the crowd's cheers carried him to the finish line.  He may have been the last runner across the finish line that day, but his effort earned him an honorary gold medal.

"So Cory literally stole the gold during his first Olympics," John Remillard said proudly.

Since then, Cory has earned a gold medal in each competition he has participated in.  In 2014, he earned four gold medals and two personal bests at the Special Olympics USA Games in New Jersey where he competed against powerlifters from around the country and lifted more than twice his body weight in the squat.

Cory Remillard was the only Granite Stater represented in the power lifting competition and one of few athletes who participate in the sport in New Hampshire.
