Financing
Education in
Iowa
101
Galen Howsare, VP of
Admin.& Finance,
Hawkeye
Community College
, gave an overview of
financing education in
Iowa
. He
stressed the Six Things You
Should Know About
Iowa
School
Finances:
·
Enrollment - # of students enrolled the first Monday
in October determines the district's budget and spending authority
for the following year. Budget is set regardless of additional
students enrolling after this date.
·
Equalization - State Legislature established law that
"cost per student" across the state will be nearly equal
to ensure every student equal access to a quality education.
·
Allowable Growth - The State Legislature controls the
annual increase in dollars available per student. This is called
"allowable growth".
·
Balance - Ration of property tax and state aid support
in a district's budget varies by district. Property-rich districts
receive less state aid.
·
Employees - School district budget is "people
intensive" with approximately 80% allocated to salaries and
benefits.
·
Restricted Funds - Restricted Funds cannot be used to
support the general operating fund.

LI
Classmates Form Band – Raise FUNds for ABI Foundation
During the second session of LI in November 2009 in Clarinda, Jay
Byers (Greater Des Moines Partnership) and Colin Peterson
(United Way
of
Central Iowa
) discussed their mutual love of music and desire to sing/play in a
band. Both had previous experience in bands and together they
decided to form a group. They allowed their LI class to submit
names for their group and thus the Dead
Yellow Canaries became the band’s name. They
have played several gigs around the state.
On Thursday, January 13, they will play at The
Underground (500 East Locust – lower level) in the
East
Village beginning at 9:00 p.m. In
addition to bringing the tunes, the band will donate 50% of the
night's profits to the ABI Foundation to benefit Leadership Iowa.
Please join the current LI class and alums for a night of live
music. Feel free to bring a friend. Click
