What You Need to Know about the Health Care Law

Are you covered? The Affordable Care Act, otherwise referred to as health care reform, requires those who are uninsured to get health insurance.

If you work for or run a small business, you should be aware of the Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP), a separate marketplace for companies with 50 or fewer full-time employees.  Once a company selects a plan, employees can sign up online through the SHOP Marketplace. Companies that purchase coverage in 2014 through the SHOP Marketplace may be able to take advantage of a small business health care tax credit of up to 50% of premium costs. Note: If you're self-employed without any employees, then you would use the individual Health Insurance Marketplace, not SHOP.

Why Mistakes Are Essential to Any Growth Strategy

Jessica Wade started a high-end clothing label in 2009. The business, which she named Jes Wade,
is  based in Manhattan and has two employees. While many owners of small companies have a low tolerance for mistakes, which I believe is one reason many of them never get bigger, Ms. Wade realizes that mistakes are learning opportunities. Allowing mistakes requires that you trust your employees. You must trust that they are doing the best they can - that they aren't trying to make mistakes. But here's the thing: If you don't allow mistakes, they will happen anyway. They'll just get swept under the rug. When they are discovered, they have often become much larger problems.Click here to read more.

6 Ways for Women Business Owners to

STOP WORRYING

Stop worrying so much ... it's bad for business. Follow these 6 steps to turn your inner worrier into a business warrior.

Are you a worrier? If you're a woman business owner, the answer is likely "yes," according to a recent report and white paper from CDR Assessment Group. The study, which focused on executives and why women have trouble breaking the glass ceiling, found that 65 percent of women leaders tend to be "worriers" under stress. In contrast, stressed out male leaders are more likely to fall into categories such as "egotists," "rule breakers" and "upstagers."

While none of these behaviors are necessarily worthy of emulation, worrying is particularly problematic because it negatively affects the perception of women as effective leaders. In contrast, being egotistical and breaking the rules ... well, aren't these pretty much the traits you think of when you think of a typical entrepreneur?

Black-eyed Peas for New Year's Luck!

Do you know why black-eyed peas are lucky on New Year's Day? As with most superstitions, there are several answers to the question. Typically, the belief that black-eyed peas are a lucky New Year's meal is especially popular in the south, so it has to do with our history, right? Maybe. To Read More Click Here
The Edge Kitchen Recipe of the Month

Black-Eyed Pea Tortellini, Ham Hock Brodo and Collards

Ingredients:

Ingredients: For the pepper vinegar:
  • 1 lb. (500 g) jalapeo chilies
  • 1 lb. (500 g) serrano chilies
  • 1 bunch fresh thyme
  • 1 head garlic
  • 1 Tbs. peppercorns
  • 1 Tbs. coriander seeds
  • 2 dried bay leaves
  • About 4 cups (32 fl. oz./1 l) distilled white vinegar

Directions:

To make the pepper vinegar, roast half of the jalapeos and half of the serrano chilies over a gas flame or on a hot grill, turning them occasionally with tongs, until blackened all over. Using the tip of a paring knife, prick each of the remaining chilies in a couple of places. Put all of the chilies in a nonreactive container with a lid. Add the thyme, garlic, peppercorns, coriander and bay leaves. Pour in the vinegar. Cover the container and let the mixture stand at room temperature, undisturbed, overnight or up to 2 weeks. The recipe makes about 4 cups (32 fl. oz./1 l) pepper vinegar; you will not need all of it for the tortellini recipe.

Jalapeo-Cheddar Corn Bread
Ingredients:

A Message From The Edge Kitchen Manager:

Traditionally in the south, the New Year's Day meal that brings luck and prosperity throughout the year includes greens (collards), peas and cornbread. Peas represent coins, greens represent paper money and cornbread represents gold. Also for the best chance of luck for every day in the year ahead, a person must eat at least 365 black-eyed peas on New Year's Day. No worries it sounds like a lot but its actually about one big bowl!

Kitchen Manager Melissa Muller choose this recipe because it incorporates a little of her Italian and Scottish roots infused with her southern experiences. She was raised in the north for 17 years and said goodbye to New York, her family, her family traditions and started her own new experiences here in Georgia. She states, "I couldn't imagine living anywhere else but Atlanta."

She wants to wish all of the clients of the Edge Connection peace, luck and prosperity for the 2014 New Year.
