Insights from January 2012 - The Needs of Small Business Owners

January 2012 has been a month of expansion for my business.  I have expanded my services and offerings, networking, marketing, and partnering, and most importantly in my vision for my business.

With this expansion, as well as the coaching coursework and reflection I've completed this month, has come great learning about my clients who are small business owners.

In the Strategic Planning tele seminar I just held with my clients, we discussed the 5 Stages of Business Growth, 9 Key Components of a Business Model and then identified the necessary action items for maximum growth over a one and five year time period.

All of the participants identified 2-3 areas that needed the most attention for the desired business growth and have created a strategic plan that will get them there with much more ease.

As I reflect back on the learning that the participants experienced a few things came to mind regarding the needs of a Small Business Owner.

First, every small business owner needs a plan - A plan to succeed!! We have all heard the adage if you "fail to plan you plan to fail".  Many business owners understand this at the daily action plan or small goal level but it became very apparent that the participants of the class had bigger better goals and visions when there were requested to step up to the plate and PLAY BIG!  I am so proud of each of the participants who gained awareness and decided to up their game.

Second, every small business owner needs a collaborative partner.  This can be a business partner, a mastermind group or a coach but the key is to have someone in your corner who will help pull out your best ideas, dreams and visions for your business and your life!  I recently hired an amazing coach, Melanie Benson Strict who has helped me generate bigger and better ideas than I ever dreamed - THANK YOU Melanie!!

Third, every small business owner needs to set themselves up to succeed.  In order to do this you must have a strong personal foundation which includes what I consider the four pillars of life - relationships, physical environment, health and well being, and finances.  When these four areas are strong and clear of tolerations or unattended business, you can succeed much faster with much more joy.  One of the pillars that I recently got in tip top shape is my physical environment.  I hired a professional organizer, Angel Cody of www.Majormom.biz, to come in and do a make over of what I considered my fairly organized office.  The outside perspective she provided and "clutter" she cleared out was simply amazing!  Angela helped me set myself up for success in organization of the physical environment but also helped me clear the guess work of what to do with all of the stuff necessary to run a successful business.  THANK YOU Angela!!

My deeper understanding of my clients needs has propelled me forward and supported me in the massive expansion of my business and ability to support those who are ready, willing and able to take their businesses to the next level.

Coaching Question: What are you doing to get your Small Business Owner needs met?

Creating Powerful Partnerships that help Grow Your Business

The role of a coach is multifaceted including creating awareness, supporting growth and development, providing outside perspective, showing unconditional support and love, and serving as a collaborative partner.  Each of which have a time and place in the coaching process.

One role that I am most honored to fill is that of collaborative partner.  Being a "partner" starts with each of us being completely authentic and understanding the intended outcome.

In order to create powerful partnerships outside of coaching, understanding WHO you are and HOW you serve your customers is first and foremost.  Power Partnerships are about co-creation, being relationship focused, and ultimately about serving each of your customers.

Here are some questions to ask yourself before partnering with another business owner.

  • How is partnering going to add more value to my clients than what I am already doing (going to do)?
  • What are my and my potential partners top 3 values?
  • What are the roles and tasks each party will be responsible for? (Products and services, Marketing, Financials, staffing, logistics, etc)
  • How aligned is the way that my potential partner and I serve customers?

My hope is that by asking yourself and your prospect partner these questions, you will create those powerful partnerships that really help grow your business.

Coaching question: With these new insights, what Powerful Partnerships are you going to create?

Featured Book:

3MPH - The Adventure of One Woman's Walk Around the World.

by Polly Letofsky

I have served on the DTC CBW board with Polly Letofsky for the past year and have had the most incredible experience working with her.  Polly is a fun and lively spirit with a get it done attitude, and simply a joy to be around.

I recently purchased her book and found it one of the best I have read in quite some time.

Polly took on the amazing challenge to be the first woman to walk around the world  - over 14,000 miles in 22 countries over a 5 year period and raised over $250,000 for breast cancer.
I personally found this educational (learning so much about several countries), inspirational (the mere feat of walking over 14,000 miles) and a pure joy. Polly's infusion of humor throughout her walk had me laughing out loud much of the time.

Polly's journey of experiences are filled with fun, challenge, and that part of the human spirit that moves us all toward the greater good.

3mph is a must read and can be picked up at Amazon, Kindle, any bookstore
or
her website for a signed copy, at www.3mphBook.com
