We Won't Leave You Stranded!

One of our Home Care Plus caregivers was on their way to work one day when she had the misfortune of getting a flat tire on the interstate.  While she had someone she could call for help, it would take that person awhile to arrive.  The caregiver called in to let the main office know she would be late for her caregiving appointment.  The Kuppens', co-owners and managers of Home Care Plus, were worried about the caregiver being stranded on the interstate and took action immediately, calling and paying for a tow service. In no time at all, help arrived and the caregiver was able to continue to her appointment with only a minor delay.  The Kuppens didn't think twice about helping out one of their employees, and it is that kind of generosity and concern that Tom and Suzy Kuppens look for in all of the caregivers that join the Home Care Plus team. Read more on our blog.

Happy New Year From Home Care Plus!

Resolve to Ask for More Help This New Year

As a caregiver, you've probably heard the scary statistics related to becoming an unpaid family caregiver many times:

  • More than 34 million unpaid caregivers provide care to someone age 18 and older who is ill or has a disability (AARP, 2008).
  • The typical caregiver is a 46 year old woman with some college experience and provides more than 20 hours of care each week to her mother (NAC, 2004).
  • Caregivers report having difficulty finding time for one's self (35%), managing emotional and physical stress (29%), and balancing work and family responsibilities (29%) (NAC, 2004).
  • Half (53%) of caregivers who said their health had gotten worse due to caregiving also said the decline in their health has affected their ability to provide care (NAC, 2006).
  • Caregivers said they do not go to the doctor because they put their family's needs first (67% said that is a major reason), or they put the care recipient's needs over their own (57%). More than half (51%) said they do not have time to take care of themselves and almost half (49%) said they are too tired to do so (NAC, 2004).
Make a New Year's resolution to take better care of yourself, which will allow you to be a better caregiver.  Look into in-home care options in your area.  Whether you need help caring for your loved one full or part-time, be sure to build in time to look after yourself when determining how often to have the professional caregiver visit.

January is Cervical Health Awareness Month

Roughly 13,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year in the U.S. and over a third of them will die.  This cancer typically strikes women ages 35-55 years old.  Regular screening is one of the best ways to prevent this disease, as well getting the HPV vaccination before being exposed to the virus.
