Look out Arizona. I think ASH is about to blow some minds this year!

If there are any doubts that we could continue our momentum from a fantastic 2013, just browse through this first issue of the 2014 Hot Break. Our board and members have been busy planning even more incredible opportunities for home brewers and our craft beer community. It's not just contributing our knowledge and help at beer festivals. It's competitions with prizes to brew pro-am beers with our local brewers, brewouts to help inspire and educate for competition entries, and panels and classes to help us reach our certification and personal goals.

Wow. It's going to be one impressive year!

Salute!

From the President

krystal bittner

What a busy first week of presidency! I am proud to be a member of ASH and look forward to representing our Club this year. Already the member and industry support we have received has been overwhelming.

Since December, I have had the pleasure of meeting with local breweries and our ASH sponsors to strengthen our existing relationships. Our partnerships with our Ninkasi Sponsor Four Peaks Brewing, Landon Evans at HDE Agency, and Mother Road Brewery continue to be a foundation for our success that we are always thankful for. They have been examples of what we can do together and we hope to include others as we continue to grow.

With that in mind, myself and the board have started tapping local resources for speakers at our meetings and planning future ASH events. Experts like Certified Cicerones Ben VanderMeer at Sierra Nevada and Ben Schwirck at Brat Haus will be part of our panels and new breweries like Dragoon and Cartel are also excited to be a part of meetings, brewouts, and other events.

Keep your eyes and ears open for what's to come and know that you can always share your ideas with myself and the board. I've already had the pleasure of talking with many members about the future of ASH. There is a buzz of excitement for 2014. Your board is working diligently to support our mission to inform and educate the Valley about homebrewing, and I'm honored to lead the largest - and best - homebrew club in the country.

As we have seen through last year's successes, it takes everyone's help to make it all happen. Help us have the best year ever by volunteering.  Here are a few ways to help right now.

Even just an hour to help keep the Clubhouse clean makes a difference. At the general meeting I will discuss more ways we can support our club's growth.

Cheers!

The competition committee has tried to implement as many of your suggestions as possible planning ASH's 2014 competitions.  It's going to be an incredible year!

Springfest Competition

The best of show winner for our big Springfest Competition is going to get to brew a pro-am with Four Peaks that will be entered in GABF in 2014.  Admission to the festival will be included as well.  Here are the dates you need to remember:

3/7 - Entry Deadline

3/15 - Judging

3/16 - Judging

3/29 - Winner Announced at Springfest

This is intended to be a big competition, just like our Oktoberfest one has been, and with a GABF pro-am opportunity up for grabs we're probably going to be inundated with entries.  You can register your entries here, which is also where you can sign up to help.  We're going to need lots of judges and stewards, and whether you're BJCP ranked or not, we'll find a place for you!

Klsch Kup

We will still be holding the annual Klsch Kup homebrew competition in remembrance of longtime ASH member Mark Helm's passing, but it will be partially incorporated into our Springfest Competition.  The Klsch entries submitted at the Springfest Competition will be formally judged and scored then, but the best of show round will take place live at our Springfest gathering.  It will be informal, just like in years past.

Anyone who enters a Klsch scoring above a certain cutoff number at the big competition will eligible for the Kup, though we encourage everyone to plan on bringing their Klsch entries to Springfest regardless.  Like before, your beer must be in a keg or other non-glass container because glass is not allowed at the park. You should also bring two gallons or more so you can share.

The whole point of this particular competition is to encourage ASH members to brew and enjoy with other members the style of beer that Mark Helm loved the most.  Although that alone should be plenty of reason to enter, the prize is going to be brewing your Klsch at OHSO.  How's that for incentive?

2014 Homebrewer of the Year

In 2014, there are going to be some huge changes to the HBOY competition.  It is now going to involve only three ASH-member-only competitions plus our big Springfest and Oktoberfest competitions.  Here are the three smaller competitions:

May: English Ales

BJCP categories accepted: 8 English Pale Ale and 11 English Brown Ale

Due: May 20, 2014

Prize: Brew day with Mother Road

July: American Ales

BJCP categories accepted: 2C Classic America Pilsner;4A Dark American Lager;6D American Wheat or Rye Beer;10A American Pale Ale10B American Amber Ale;10C American Brown Ale14B American IPA

Due: July 15, 2014

Prize: Brew day with Professional Brewery TBA

November: Holiday/Winter Beers

BJCP categories accepted:19A Old Ale and 21B Christmas/Winter Specialty Spiced Beer

Due: November 18, 2014

Prize: Brew day with Professional Brewery TBA

There's a good chance the two TBA brew days are each going to involve a pro-am of some sort, and everything should be ready to announce next month.  Start preparing now!

Details about 2014 HBOY and our other big competitions are available here (http://club.azhomebrewers.org/page/competitions-1).  We are working on arranging a prize that will make previous years' prizes pale in comparison.

2013 Homebrewer of the Year

Finally, you probably all know by now that Ken Forrey won the award overall.  Congrats, Ken!  What we haven't announced yet are the brewers of the highest-scoring beers in each of the individual competitions:

3/19 - Light Hybrid - Dennis Mitchell

4/16 - Extract Beer - Matt Jacobson

5/21 - English Brown - Dennis Mitchell

6/18 - Fruit Beer - Christian Chandler

7/16 -Pilsner - Barry Tingleff

8/20 - European Amber Lager - Robert Walsmann

10/15 - Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer - Ken Forrey

11/19 - IPA - Darrin Schauble

12/13 - Light Lager - Bryan Gold

A lot of people brewed some really impressive beers, and it was especially great to see such an awesome turnout for the IPA competition.  Contact me Darrin so I can send you what you need to set up your brew day at San Tan!

Oktoberfest Competition

It's a long way away, but Oktoberfest has been ASH's biggest competition of the year for as far back as I can tell.  Here are the dates to keep in mind:

9/19 - Entry Deadline

9/27 - Judging

9/28 - Judging

10/19 - Winner Announced at Oktoberfest

I can guarantee the best of show prize is going to make Oktoberfest more than worthwhile, just like it has in years past; it'll just be a little bit longer before I can announce it.

Volunteer Corner
From Steene Routh

We have two of our big beer events coming up and it's time to volunteer. Your participation and willingness to share your knowledge of craft beers really goes a long way to enhance the attendee experience as well as helps ASH earn money towards funding a new clubhouse.

Thanks in advance for making these events a WIN - WIN scenario for everyone!

New ASH Happy Hours
Introducing ASH Tuesdays

Block off your Tuesday evenings. Forever.

Tuesdays are now ASH Tuesdays, with an ASH event almost every Tuesday of the year. We already have a board meeting on the first Tuesday of each month (open to all members), and we have the general meeting on most third Tuesdays of the month. What to do with those other two Tuesdays? Happy Hour!

Since losing several great Happy Hour coordinators, our Happy Hour program has floundered.  No member has stepped up to take the lead, so the board is taking happy hour into its own hands. Happy Hour on the second Tuesday of each month now will be sponsored by me, your VP. The fourth Tuesday of the month will be the President's Happy Hour with Krystal. Not only will we have more consistent happy hours, but Tuesdays avoid competing with the massive amount of conflicting beer events on Thursdays - the day we used to host happy hours.

So, block out your Tuesday nights and come have a drink or two with your board members, talk ASH, talk homebrew, pick up your membership card and have some fun.

The first President's Happy Hour will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28 at Papago Brewing Company at 7101 E. McDowell Road in Scottsdale. Joining Krystal will be Kurt Widmer of Widmer Brothers Brewing. Kurt will talk about his homebrewing past.

For more details and listings about other happy hour dates and locations, go to our new happy hour event page.

December Recap
2013 ASHy Winners and Your 2014 ASH Board

There was no formal General Meeting in December as the board prepared for the ASH Holiday Party at the Holiday Party, the 2nd Annual ASHy Awards were presented and ASH members elected the 2014 Board.

2013 ASHys: And the Winners Are....

On Saturday, December 14, ASH recognized the best in Arizona's fast-growing beer industry with its 2nd Annual ASHy Awards. Forty-two honors were given for everything from Best Brewmaster and Best Arizona Beer to Best Beer Tattoo and Best Place to Bike and Drink.

Four Peaks Brewery won honors for its beer Hop Knot as Best Arizona Beer. It also won for Best IPA (Hop Knot), Best Arizona Brewery, Best Imperial/Double IPA (Double Knot), and Best Pub Food.

Also taking home multiple awards were Fate Brewery for Best Arizona Brewmaster (Adam Schmeichel), Best Pale Ale (American Pale Ale), and Best Stout or Porter (Candy Bar Milk Stout),

The new Arizona Wilderness Brewery in Gilbert won for Best New Brewery, Best Session Beer (Little Guy Rye), and Best Sour/Wild Beer (Bear Wallow Beliner Weisse).

In addition to ASHys for brewing and the best beer styles, there are awards for those working in the industry and for the people and places that make up Arizona's beer culture.

OHSO Nanobrewery took away nods for Best Place to Bike and Drink and Best Place to Drink Outdoors.  On the lighter side, ASH member Vickie Gerstner was awarded the Best Beer Tattoo, and North Mountain Brewery won for Best Tap Handles.

The 2014 ASH Board

In another form of voting, ASH also selected its 2014 that will lead the club as we pursue our mission to promote the time-honored tradition of homebrewing through information, education, and practice. Krystal Bittner was elected ASH President, the first woman to lead the group in its 19 years.

Dennis Mitchell was elected Vice President. Christian Chandler returns as Treasurer as do Laura Kuning as Secretary, Angela Muiz as Communications and John Rudolph as At-Large/ Steene Routh was selected as the second At-Large representative.

Visit the ASH Website for board contact information and responsibilities of each position.

January General Meeting

Tuesday, January 21, 7pm - 9pm
ASH Clubhouse
2515 N. Scottsdale Rd.
Scottsdale, AZ

Join us for the first Meeting of 2014. We will have a Tristan White from Dragoon Brewing in Tucson to discuss hops and its single hop series Unihopper Pale Ale. Dragoon won an ASHy for Best Arizona Lager, and they also make a very popular IPA. Laura Kuning and Matt Brown will discuss the ASH Single Hop Project and their own experiences brewing single hop beers.

Some of the single hop beers brewed at the Single Hop Brewout will be on hand to sample so look forward to trying some of the different varieties.

Don't forget to bring some homebrew to share!

For new members, walk in, pick up and/or scan your membership card at the front desk, then make your way through the crowd to put your homebrew in the walk-in cooler in the back. You can use cups on a shelf next to the walk-in cooler door (or bring your own tasting cup) and homebrew in the cooler is free game to sample. Grab a seat or mingle and talk homebrew. ASH members are great and very few bite.

The ASH Hot Break is distributed every month to our members and friends. If you stumbled upon this issue through Facebook or Twitter, take a minute to join our website, azhomebrewers.org, so you can get our newsletters and updates in your email. (There might even be some secret events and deals announced as well).

We're always looking for reader input. If you're excited about a new project, teaching others how to brew, hosting a homebrew event, or have anything else you'd like to mention on Hot Break, email [email protected]. We want to see stories and photos from our members.

We'll see you at the General Meeting. Till then brew on.

Prost!

Angela
