New Year, Same You-Only Better

If you're like most people, you spent the holidays overindulging and are looking ahead to the New Year as a chance to return to (or perhaps begin) healthy habits. Having a game plan going into the New Year can help you hit the ground running-pun intended-so read our blog for tips to make lasting changes that you'll be celebrating come next New Year's Eve.

Healthy Eating Habits for the New Year

Is one of your resolutions to eat healthier or lose weight? Instead of trying a fad diet that might help you shed pounds initially but is unsustainable longterm, try to make one or two small tweaks to your diet each week for a month. Some ideas:
  • Eat breakfast-start your day with oatmeal, scrambled eggs or a fruit and vegetable smoothie
  • Cut the amount of cream or sugar you put in your coffee by half
  • Eat an apple for a mid-morning or mid afternoon snack
  • Have a cup of tea with a splash of lemon juice when you feel the urge to snack
  • Eat grilled fish at least once a week (simply drizzle with olive oil, lemon juice, salt, pepper, onion and garlic powder)
  • Toss your veggies in olive oil and sea salt and roast in the oven at 400 degrees for 30-40 minutes, then leave them out on the counter for snacking.
  • If you eat out a lot, order an appetizer as your entree. Resolve to cook at home at least 4 times a week. A good way to cutback is to bring lunch to work.
Small changes can equal big results over time. They are easier to live with and are less likely to leave you feeling deprived!

A Little Help Can Go a Long Way

If you're a family caregiver, you may be familiar with the terms caregiver burnout or caregiver stress. The physical, emotional and financial burden of caring for a sick or declining loved one can easily become overwhelming. How can you determine if you are reaching your breaking point? Be on the lookout for changes in your diet or sleeping habits, a lack of desire to see family and friends or a loss of enjoyment in hobbies. Feelings of depression, helplessness, or the urge to hurt yourself or the person you are caring for are more serious signs that you should seek help from a doctor or other professional immediately.

As an in-home, non-medical senior care provider, Home Care Plus can help shoulder the burden. Perhaps you've been handling the caregiving for a loved one but an advancement in their disease has made it impossible for you to meet all of their needs. Maybe your loved one is recovering from a recent hospital stay or surgery and you work full-time, but both of you would be more comfortable with someone looking after their needs during the day. Or maybe you realize that the stress of caregiving is negatively impacting your health and happiness. Regardless of the reason, you can rest assured that our professional team of compassionate, dependable caregivers will be there for you and your loved one.
