Happy New Year!

Sometimes the New Year can feel like more pressure than joy or happiness. I get a queasy feeling about the whole resolution process. It feels hard to do because when I am not conscious about it. More often than not, I discover that I never followed through with last years resolution, that is, if I have had the good fortune of remembering what it even was! That always leaves me feeling disappointed!  When I have been successful, it is a huge yesssss! (a huge hit of seratonin).

Resolutions are all about making commitments. They consist of everything from setting life journey goals to everyday to-do lists. When I consciously set commitments my success rate goes up, especially when i keep them realistic and clear. It requires that I first write it down and second reflect at the end of the day noticing my success or revising my failures. I either OOPs myself or acknowledge myself by saying, "I did it! Yesssssss!" If there is a tinge of guilt, I usually continue to fail.

Kids need opportunities for consciously setting commitments for themselves as well. It sets them up for successful goal setting in the future.

So why not start the new year by doing a daily conscious commitments?  Make time by doing this on the way to school or at the breakfast table. If you make it part of a routine you are more likely to be successful.

It could be  a group commitment (ie "We commit to take a deep breath when we feel anxious or upset.") or an individual commitment (ie. "I am going to be helpful by sharing my swing with a friend today."). Make sure it is specific and clear.

Remember to check in at the end of the day. Refrain from judging the outcomes. A simple "OOPs " with revision or "Yes, We did it!" will build enough consciousness leading you to success.

May the New Year bring you many opportunities for peace, joy and gratitude!
