This session is for key university personnel, university grants administrators, university tech transfer offices, and university Intellectual Property offices who want to increase university revenues via the SBIR and STTR programs. This session covers issues that need to be addressed both as the proposal is being developed and after it is awarded looking specifically from the university's perspective. We explore budgets, participation by researchers, conflict of interest, post-award reporting requirements, letters of support, personnel and percent effort, the differences between SBIR and STTR, and SBIR/STTR requirements vs. what is flexible. We'll also present updated information on SBIR/STTR policies since the 2012 reauthorization as well as discuss best practices to use SBIR/STTR as a way to produce more positive tech transfer results. Only Virginia based universities are invited to attend.

These Lunch & Learns are for any Virginia based university researcher, postdoc, grad student or local small business interested in learning the benefits of the SBIR and STTR programs. SBIR grants (Small Business Innovation Research) and STTR grant program (Small Business Technology Transfer) provide $150K - $1.5M in early stage R&D funding for high risk, new technology development. 11 participating federal agencies use this program to fund early stage technology development that will help them meet their missions. Over $2.3 Billion is available each year in this program.  

Each session will discuss the purpose of the programs, basic qualifications, participating agencies, funding amounts, and how to start to plan your approach to writing a winning proposal. We'll also provide a brief discussion on how university PosDocs and Graduate students can participate in these programs. Lunch will be provided. Details on how CIT supports Virginia based applicants will also be discussed.

April 16: SBIR/STTR Commercialization Planning

This session is offered as a morning session only. Topics covered include: SBIR/STTR Commercialization - what this means at various agencies, including NSF, NIH and DOD; Tips for credible commercialization plans; An in depth look at the NSF Commercialization plan.
