Six Month SBIR/STTR Training Forecast 

CIT is pleased to announce a robust SBIR/STTR training schedule over the next 6 months across the Commonwealth of Virginia.  This includes:

SBIR/STTR ANNOUNCEMENTS 

Dept. of Energy Phase 0 SBIR/STTR Assistance Program:
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has officially launched its first ever SBIR/STTR Phase 0 Assistance program, aimed helping eligible small R&D businesses apply for SBIR/STTR federal funding from DOE.  These services are
at no cost to participants. Geared towards women, minorities, and companies in states with low DOE SBIR/STTR success. For more info and eligibility, click HERE.     

 

Change in NIH Omnibus Deadlines Announced: 

The next SBIR/STTR Omnibus Solicitation Deadline for non-AIDS applications is April 5, 2015.  There will not be an August 5, 2015 due date. From then on, SBIR/STTR due dates will fall on September 5, January 5, and April 5, as described in the NIH Guide.  For details, click HERE

QuickBooks & Compliance WEBINAR  

 
QuickBooks & Compliance for SBIR/STTR Award Recipients -- WEBINAR
February 27, 2015, 1:00-2:30PM Eastern

This WEBINAR is for SBIR/STTR award winners who want to better manage their projects through best practices and the use of QuickBooks. Webinar will discuss how to manage your SBIR/STTR grant or contract to improve your odds of moving from Phase I to Phase II, and Phase II to Phase III (transition and/or commercialization). We will review the various sources for managing funds from DoD, NIH, NSF, or DoE, as well as reporting requirements and close-out procedures. Learn how to use QuickBooks accounting software to manage accounting requirements. Topics will include: setting up a chart of accounts; time and effort reporting; creating a budget; reporting by project; separation of costs by project.

Increasing University SBIR/STTR  

Best Practices to Increase University Participation in SBIR/STTR  
For key university administration, grants administrators, Tech Transfer and Intellectual Property Offices

March 4, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA 

 

This session is for key university personnel, university grants administrators, university tech transfer offices, and university Intellectual Property offices who want to increase university revenues via the SBIR and STTR programs. This session covers issues that need to be addressed both as the proposal is being developed and after it is awarded looking specifically from the university's perspective. We explore budgets, participation by researchers, conflict of interest, post-award reporting requirements, letters of support, personnel and percent effort, the differences between SBIR and STTR, and SBIR/STTR requirements vs. what is flexible. We'll also present updated information on SBIR/STTR policies since the 2012 reauthorization as well as discuss best practices to use SBIR/STTR as a way to produce more positive tech transfer results. Only Virginia based universities are invited to attend.

These Lunch & Learns are for any Virginia based university researcher, postdoc, grad student or local small business interested in learning the benefits of the SBIR and STTR programs. SBIR grants (Small Business Innovation Research) and STTR grant program (Small Business Technology Transfer) provide $150K - $1.5M in early stage R&D funding for high risk, new technology development. 11 participating federal agencies use this program to fund early stage technology development that will help them meet their missions. Over $2.3 Billion is available each year in this program.  

 

Each session will discuss the purpose of the programs, basic qualifications, participating agencies, funding amounts, and how to start to plan your approach to writing a winning proposal. We'll also provide a brief discussion on how university PosDocs and Graduate students can participate in these programs. Lunch will be provided. Details on how CIT supports Virginia based applicants will also be discussed.

In partnership with George Mason University, this SBIR/STTR proposal prep workshop discusses a "How to Win" approach to the process. We'll cover the background and basics in the morning, and detailed proposal development techniques focused on the National Institutes of Health SBIR/STTR programs.  

 

Registrants may attend a � day Commercialization Planning & Budgeting session on March 18 in Fairfax VA at no additional charge.

In partnership with GMU, this SBIR/STTR proposal prep workshop discusses a "How to Win" approach to the process. We'll cover the background and basics in the morning, and detailed proposal development techniques focused on the National Science Foundation SBIR/STTR programs.

NSF SBIR/STTR Proposal Prep Workshop   
April 14-16, Blacksburg, VA

CIT is proud to partner with Virginia Tech to present this special SBIR/STTR workshop designed with the busy researcher in mind. Attend all or part of this low cost, two and a half day session. The first two days are presented in morning and afternoon sessions - attend the morning or afternoon session each day that fits your schedule best. The third day presents a half day commercialization planning workshop (morning session only).

 

April 14: SBIR/STTR Program Details

This session will be delivered as a morning session and afternoon session - attend the session that fits your schedule. Topics covered include: A basic intro to SBIR/STTR; compare/contrast various agencies, including NSF, DOD and NIH; A look at what is new in SBIR/STTR; tips to compete more effectively; resources available to Virginia based firms to support your SBIR and STTR submissions.

 

April 15: NSF Proposal Preparation

This session will be delivered as a morning session and afternoon session - attend the session that fits your schedule. The NSF SBIR and STTR programs provide over $160M each year in SBIR/STTR funding. 9 broad topic areas provide a breadth of opportunities for early stage researchers who need funding to show proof of concept and funding to build out the technology for commercial use. Topics covered at this session include: Details of putting together an NSF proposal; Doing your homework; A section by section look at writing your proposal; NSF SBIR/STTR budget preparation.

 

April 16: SBIR/STTR Commercialization Planning

This session is offered as a morning session only. Topics covered include: SBIR/STTR Commercialization - what this means at various agencies, including NSF, NIH and DOD; Tips for credible commercialization plans; An in depth look at the NSF Commercialization plan.

CIT's GAP Fund identifies and makes funds available to seed-stage technology firms with a high potential for commercialization, rapid growth and downstream private-equity financing.  Companies who have received SBIR financing may be strong candidates for CIT's GAP fund and/or other 3rd party financing.
