NARI Central Indianapolis Chapter E-News
Dear Fellow NARI Indianapolis Chapter Members,

I am excited and honored to be your NARI Indianapolis Chapter President for 2016!  Larry Dorfman has done an excellent job leading this group for a long time and I'm grateful for his years of support and dedication to the chapter.  I am also thankful that Larry will still be very active as Executive Director for the Chapter as we move forward!

As we start 2016, there are three areas that I would like to see our NARI chapter excel at:
  • membership
  • volunteering
  • public relations
I challenge each member to help this group continue to grow, whether by bringing in prospective new members, volunteering your time for a board position, or simply by attending and actively participating in every meeting.  This is the year to take your participation to the next level and reap the rewards of being active in this great organization.

We have a great nucleus of knowledgeable and respected remodeling professionals and unique vendors.  Continuing to grow from this core is only be possible with the help of each and every member spreading the word on NARI.

In 2016 we will introduce some new volunteering opportunities to help the greater Indianapolis community with our construction knowledge and industry connections.  We have some ideas in mind for this, but would love any feedback if you know of an area group or project that could use our services.

One area where we need to continue to evolve is promotion of the Indianapolis NARI chapter.  To help promote the NARI Indianapolis group and its members we have contracted out Megan Bennet with
Socially Acceptable to handle our marketing, PR and correspondence for the club.  Megan came to us at the recommendation of Brian Boyd (Boyd Restoration) and I'm confident you will find her services, knowledge and media connections a great asset for us in 2016 and moving forward.

In closing, thanks for opportunity to guide the Indianapolis NARI Chapter in 2016.  I look forward to the challenge of growing the club and its membership.  Heres to a great 2016!

New online permit services available from Indianapolis Code Enforcement

As of December 1, 2015 the Department of Code Enforcement is able to issue a variety of permits including various building permits, including Structural, Electrical, HVAC, Plumbing and others.

There is an additional fee for on-line permits.  If a credit card is used there is a $2.00 charge plus 2% of the total fees.  This will change in February when a new vendor will be in charge at which time the fee for credit card transactions will be 3.2%.  The fee may be paid via E-check and the charge for that is $.95 per transaction.

Users need to go to www.indy.gov/dce and then go to the Citizens Access Portal.  It will be necessary to create a user account.  Plans may be sent electronically where plan review is required.

We are discussing the possibility of the Department sending in a representative to do a live seminar with our membership to give us all a better understanding of how the system works and how we can get the most out of this service.  More information on that will be forthcoming.

Chapter Member Highlight: Zach Hyatt
Zach Hyatt with Modern Builder Supply joined NARI Central Indiana Chapter in 2001. Modern Business Supply partners with builders, contractor and other businesses to supply competitively priced building materials to the growing market. Zach supplies materials for residential and commercial projects of any size, from $1,000 to $30,000 or more and depending on what materials are being sourced, lead times can range from a few hours to a few weeks. Zach's grew up in Fountain Square and has a strong love of the older, historic homes and buildings he gets to work on from time to time. His dream project would be to work on an old public school renovation, focusing on the vintage and historical pieces - trim, windows, flooring, etc.

When asked what NARI does for him, Zach pointed to networking and building relationships as the best features of our Central Indiana NARI chapter and he believes they are the biggest benefit to members and future members.

"NARI does a tremendous job of making you feel included," says Zach. "Knowing there is a reserve of knowledge to feed from with the relationships you have made is essential."
