January 2016 - Seattle

Help Sort and Organize Clothing
Eastside Baby Corner (EBC)

Date/Time: Variety of dates and times during the month. Check the volunteer calendar for available dates and times.

Location: 1510 NW Maple St, Issaquah

Volunteers and staff at Eastside Baby Corner collect community donations, purchase and distribute children's and maternity items to families in collaboration with virtually every organization helping families in our area. Case managers from partner agencies assess the needs of the family, request the items from EBC, then pick up and deliver them to the family. Serving a broad area across King County that extends to the Cascade foothills and from south of Renton into south Snohomish County, EBC serves as a diaper bank, a clothing bank, and a food source for more than 500 kids each week. Volunteers are needed to help sort and organize donated items for redistribution to families in need on the eastside. Please dress in layers, the warehouse is cold in the winter and hot in the summer. For your safety, please wear closed toed shoes. Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated while you volunteer.

Ages: Families with children ages 7 and older are welcome to volunteer. All children under age 14 must be accompanied by an adult who will work with them for the entire shift.

Time Commitment: One and one-half to two hour shifts

MLK Weekend of Service
Earthcorps

Date/Time: There are events on Saturday, January 16, Sunday January 17, and Monday, January 18. All events run from noon - 4pm

Location: Click the links for addresses and directions:
Saturday: Brooklake Blueberry Farm: Federal Way
Sunday: Pioneer Park: Mercer Island
Monday: Cheasty Greenspace: MLK Weekend of Service Signature Event

The Basics:

Earthcorps supplies gloves, tools, water, light refreshments and volunteer education. We will provide everything you need to know about tool use and safety, forest health, information on the park, and the importance of the work you'll be doing. No prior experience necessary, just come ready to learn something new!

For Your Safety And Comfort, Please Bring:
  • Clothing that can get dirty (because it will!)
  • Long pants and a long sleeve shirt (helps protect against prickly plants)
  • Sturdy shoes that can handle some mud (closed toed shoes are required: work boots, hiking boots, or running shoes are all fine)
  • Sack lunch and snacks
  • Full water bottle
  • EarthCorps runs our events rain or shine! Remember to check the weather and bring appropriate layers and rain gear/sun wear if needed.
While the exact tasks at hand vary, projects will focus on improving the forests and parks in our local cities. Healthy and thriving forests are vital to our community because they absorb and naturally filter rain water, absorb toxins in the air, produce clean oxygen, provide living spaces for wildlife, and they create a place for people to connect with the outdoors. In order to help create healthy forests, Earthcorps focuses on removing aggressive weeds (like English Ivy or Himalayan Blackberry), maintaining areas where these weeds have been removed, and planting trees and shrubs during the rainy season.

Ages: A parent or guardian must accompany volunteers under the age of 12 for the duration of the volunteer event. Youth 12-18 can attend events unaccompanied, but must bring a filled out and signed Youth Volunteer Waiver to each volunteer event. Please present youth waivers to the event staff at the registration tent.

Time Commitment: Four hours

Volunteers inspect, sort and repack these donations for distribution to our network of 275 hunger relief partners. Volunteers must wear close-toed shoes and we suggest dressing in layers as the warehouse is not climate controlled.

Foster an Animal
PAWS

Date/Time: Flexible. Some animals will need as little as two weeks of care, while others may need care for up to three months.

Location: 15305 44th Ave W, Lynnwood. Foster volunteers must be able to get to the PAWS shelter in Lynnwood on a regular basis.

PAWS foster families provide a temporary home for kittens, cats, puppies and dogs in need. These families provide food and care to homeless animals that are either too young or sick to be adopted. PAWS is in desperate need of foster homes! By taking an animal into your right away home on a temporary basis, you provide them with a safe place to rest and heal, while giving us additional time to find them a permanent home. By providing safe temporary homes, PAWS foster families prevent overcrowding at PAWS Companion Animal Shelter, while having lots of fun! Click here for more detailed information about fostering an animal.

Ages: An adult must be the primary caregiver but children and teens can help with foster animals in your home
