Food Packing
Feed My Starving Children (FMSC)

Date/Time: Multiple dates and times, see website for details

Location: FMSC has MN packing locations in Chanhassen, Coon Rapids and Eagan

Feed My Starving Children is a non-profit Christian organization committed to feeding starving children hungry in body and spirit. Our approach is simple: children and adults hand-pack meals formulated specially for starving children, and we ship the meals to nearly 70 countries around the world. Packaged in small pouches, this easy-to-prepare food blend has won rave reviews all over the world. While the formula was designed to save the lives of severely malnourished and starving children, the ingredients also improve the health, growth and physical wellbeing of children who are no longer in immediate danger of starvation. In 2014, FMSC welcomed nearly 900,000 volunteers to pack more than 229 million meals through its permanent sites and nationwide MobilePack program. During packing sessions volunteers participate in an assembly line process. With the help of volunteers, dry ingredients are poured into bags; the bags are weighed and sealed, then boxed and put onto pallets. Packing sessions include a brief orientation and video followed by packing instructions. At the end of your shift you will learn how many meals you and your fellow volunteers have packed.

Ages: The minimum age to volunteer at FMSC is five years old. Additional FMSC age requirements can be found online.

Time Commitment: Two-hour shifts

Mentor a Child
Kids 'n Kinship

Date/Time: Ongoing opportunity

Location: Your home or the community

Kids 'n Kinship matches volunteer mentor families, couples, and individuals with youth ages 5-16 in need of additional positive role models for fun and enriching weekly activities. Mentoring Works! Please consider stepping forward today to mentor a child with your family. We are based in Dakota County and have served families in Apple Valley, Burnsville, Eagan, Farmington, Lakeville & Rosemount for 44 years. Matches are made based on compatible personalities, ages and interests as well as preferences of both volunteer family and the youth and parent/guardian. Our families say that mentoring together ensures they have weekly family time and that it's easy to include another child with the family activity, whether it's a board game, sledding, a trip to a park, or going to the zoo or a museum. We offer discounted passes to area attractions to make activities more affordable, a 45-minute information session, a 2-hour training session, as well as ongoing training and support. We ask mentors and mentees to commit to a year's time together in order to build their relationship; however, many of our matches become lifelong friendships and our average match is about 3 years. Please consider being a mentor to a child - it is one of the most challenging and rewarding ways to volunteer!

Ages: Mentors are families, couples, or individuals over 21

Time Commitment: One to four hours per week, on your own time (very flexible scheduling: can be weekends, evenings or after school)

Volunteer Grocery Shopper
IOCP

Date/Time: Saturday, January 9 or 23, 11am - 1pm

Location: IOCP Food Shelf, 1605 County Road 101 N, Plymouth. Please enter through Resale 101

Volunteer Grocery Shoppers will use request lists to shop for low-income seniors who are unable to come to the IOCP food shelf on their own because of limited mobility or access to transportation. After shopping for the client's food items, volunteers will weigh the items to record what is leaving the food shelf. It is important volunteers pay close attention to the person's request list since many of our clients have strict dietary restrictions and/or they don't want to waste food that isn't useful to them.

Ages: Volunteers ages 5-13 must sign up to work with an adult

Time Commitment: Approximately two hours. Volunteers can sign up once or make an ongoing commitment. No prior training or experience is required.

Prepare and Share a Shelter Meal
St. Stephen's Human Services

Date/Time: Daily, 6:30pm

Location: St. Stephen's Emergency Shelter, 2211 Clinton Ave S., Minneapolis

St. Stephen's Shelter seeks volunteers to coordinate meal groups that plan, purchase and prepare monthly meals for 50 - 55 people (45 shelter guests plus volunteers, your meal team and evening staff). St. Stephen's strives to create a warm and hospitable environment for all shelter guests. A typical meal includes a meat-based entree (non-pork), vegetarian side, vegetable or salad and dessert. The cost of the meal is approximately $100 to $150. Meal groups eat alongside guests, contribute to a welcoming atmosphere and help with clean up. Groups are highly encouraged to prepare the meals off site, as the shelter kitchen is small.

Ages: Families with children ages 10 and older are welcome to volunteer.

Time Commitment: Dinner is served nightly at 7pm. Most groups prepare the meal off-site and then arrive around 6:30pm for additional prep time or to reheat dishes. The ideal groups will commit to monthly meals for 6-12 months (preferred, but not required). We encourage meal groups to commit to a single experience and then let their team decide whether they are able to make an extended commitment.
