January 2017 - Seattle

MLK Weekend of Service
Earthcorps

Date/Time: There are events on Saturday, January 14, Sunday January 15, and Monday, January 16. All events run from 10am - 2pm

Location: Click the links for addresses and directions: The Basics: Earths Corps provides gloves, tools, water and snack bars. We will teach you everything you need to know about tool use, safety, forest health, and the importance of the work you will be doing. No prior experience necessary, just come ready to learn something new.

For your safety and comfort please bring:
  • Clothing that can get dirty (because it will!)
  • Long pants and a long sleeve shirt (helps protect against prickly plants)
  • Sturdy shoes that can handle some mud (closed toed shoes are required: work boots, hiking boots, or running shoes are all fine)
  • Sack lunch and snacks
  • Full water bottle
EarthCorps runs our events rain or shine! Remember to check the weather and bring appropriate layers and rain gear/sun wear if needed. While the exact tasks at hand vary, projects will focus on improving the forests and parks in our local cities. Healthy and thriving forests are vital to our community because they absorb and naturally filter rain water, absorb toxins in the air, produce clean oxygen, provide living spaces for wildlife, and they create a place for people to connect with the outdoors. In order to help create healthy forests, Earthcorps focuses on removing aggressive weeds (like English Ivy or Himalayan Blackberry), maintaining areas where these weeds have been removed, and planting trees and shrubs during the rainy season.

Ages: A parent or guardian must accompany volunteers under the age of 12 for the duration of the volunteer event. Youth 12-18 can attend events unaccompanied, but must bring a filled out and signed Youth Volunteer Waiver to each volunteer event. Please present youth waivers to the event staff at the registration tent.

Time Commitment: Four hours

  • Deodorant (for men and women)
  • Gift Cards to grocery stores

Planting Trees at Pinnacle Peak Park
MLK Day of Service - King County Parks

Date/Time: Monday, January 16, 10am - 2pm

Location: SE 481st St and SE Mud Mountain Road, Enumclaw. From Hwy 410 take the SE Mud Mountain Road east. Turn left on SE 481st Street and follow to new parking area for Pinnacle Peak Park.

Come serve on MLK Day by helping to plant trees. We will be replanting a pasture into a forest around the new parking lot at King County's Pinnacle Peak Park. Healthy forests and trees store carbon and contribute to clean air and water, healthy habitat for salmon and other wildlife, and more livable communities. One Million Trees is part of King County's ambitious plan to reduce carbon pollution and prepare for the impacts of a changing climate. This project hopes to get in 700 trees over 3 acres of old pasture land. Be prepared to work in the rain. Gloves and tools will be provided. It's a good idea to bring lunch with you; light snacks and water (hot and cold) will be provided. This is a perfect event to bring out your whole family to get everyone involved.

Ages:
Families with children age six and older are welcome to participate

Time Commitment: Four hours

Friendly Visitors for Seniors
Friend to Friend America

Date/Time: Ongoing

Location: Various Assisted Living, Adult Family and Group homes in the Greater Seattle area. Friend To Friend America matches volunteers in five Puget Sound counties: King, Kitsap, Pierce, Snohomish, and Thurston.

Many of the 60,000 elderly and disabled persons living in a 'Home' in the Puget Sound area never have a special visitor. Living away from family and friends, they feel isolated and lonely, which leads to further physical and mental deterioration. Many are discouraged and depressed and have lost their will to live. Visits by a caring friend add a dimension that enriches and make the lives of seniors more meaningful. Friend to Friend America links volunteers with elder friends to promote social and emotional wellness for those living in extended-care communities.

Ages: Families with children are welcome to volunteer

Time Commitment: A minimum of two hours per month for a year

Foster an Animal
PAWS

Date/Time: Flexible. Some animals will need as little as two weeks of care, while others may need care for up to three months.

Location: 15305 44th Ave W, Lynnwood. Foster parent volunteers need to transport animals to PAWS in Lynnwood, WA on a regular basis for vaccinations, vet checks, weight checks and spay and neuter surgeries. Vaccination appointments and weigh-ins for kittens and puppies are scheduled every two weeks. Veterinarian appointments are scheduled as needed for each animal, generally every 7-14 days.

PAWS foster families provide a temporary home for kittens, cats, puppies and dogs in need. These families provide food and care to homeless animals that are either too young or sick to be adopted. By taking an animal into your home on a temporary basis, you provide them with a safe place to rest and heal, while giving us additional time to find them a permanent home. By providing safe temporary homes, PAWS foster families prevent overcrowding at PAWS Companion Animal Shelter, while having lots of fun! Click here for more detailed information about fostering an animal.

Ages: An adult must be the primary caregiver but children and teens can help with foster animals in your home.

Time Commitment: Between two weeks and three months.
