News for the ASCA Communique?
A Note from Andrea
We are excited to begin 2018 with news that places Alaska in the national spotlight!

The Alaska State Council on the Arts is a member of the National Assembly of State Art Agencies (NASAA), which is a consortium of state arts agencies in all states and territories.

We are thrilled that ASCA's Board of Trustees Chair, Benjamin Brown, who was elected to chair NASAA's Board of Directors last fall, will participate in a briefing at the National Press Club this month to increase appreciation of the essential economic benefits of arts and culture in the United States and in Alaska.  The presentation will be streamed on the NASAA Facebook page on Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at 1:30 pm.

It is also a great pleasure to announce Dr. Jane Chu will be making her second visit to Alaska as chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts to participate in the Creative Forces Summit on February 21-22, 2018. While in Alaska, she'll also be visiting Fairbanks and Bethel. Her last visit to Alaska was in August, 2015. Since then, Dr. Chu has visited all 50 states and has a remarkable collection of sketches from her travels to share.

Learn more about the Anchorage Creative Forces Community meeting with the NEA and register to attend here.  Registration opens January 15, 2018.

We hope to see you there!

Rasmuson Foundation Individual Artist Awards Program |
Project Awards and Fellowships to open for application on January 15, 2018
Rasmuson Foundation honors the merit and significance of a life dedicated to serious artistic exploration and growth. The Foundation believes an artist's energy, ideas, and creative drive cannot bear fruit without time devoted to experimentation, education, and personal reflection. We also acknowledge artists need opportunities to explore at various stages of their artistic careers.

With these guiding principles in mind, Rasmuson Foundation has created three award programs for individual artists living and working in Alaska:
  • Project Awards: Awards of $7,500 for emerging, mid-career, and mature artists in all disciplines for specific, short-term projects that have a clear benefit to the artist and the development of his/her work. Approximately 25 Project Awards are granted annually. Project Awards are available in all 11 artistic disciplines. (Application opening January 15, 2018)
  • Fellowships: $18,000 awards for mid-career or mature artists to focus their energy and attention for a one-year period on developing their creative work. The Fellowship program awards grants in 11 artistic disciplines that rotate on a two-year cycle. Disciplines considered in 2018 are: Media Arts, Multidiscipline, Music Composition, New Genre, Presentation/Interpretation, Visual Arts. Approximately 10 Fellowships are awarded each year. (Application opening January 15, 2018)
  • Distinguished Artist Award: A single $40,000 annual award for a mature artist of recognized stature with a history of creative excellence and accomplishment in the arts. (Nominations closed for 2018)
In addition to the grant award, all artists will have an opportunity to participate in a flexible course with Creative Capital, one of the preeminent artist skill-building nonprofits organizations in the country. Rasmuson Foundation covers the cost of the training.

The Distinguished Artist Award and the Fellowships and Project Awards have distinct applications and review processes. The Distinguished Artist Award nominations are closed for 2018, and the

Fellowships and Project Award applications will open on January 15, 2018. Deadline for artists to apply for Fellowships and Project Awards will be March 1, 2018.
