Pamela Runyon, TA '96, presenting 2017 Alumni of the Year Award to E. Stuart Kitchen, TA '66

Hello, TA community! For those of you who don't know me, I'm a proud 1996 graduate of TA. After graduating from TA, I attended  Richard Bland College, & graduated with an Associate of Arts degree in 1998. I then transferred to the College of William & Mary, & graduated with a Bachelors of Arts degree, with a major in history & a minor in government, in 2000. Afterward completing my undergraduate work, I attended the T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond, & received my law degree in 2005.

I live in Colonial Heights with my husband Anthony, & my three children, Kelly, James, & Anne. I'm excited to return to TA, & look forward to continuing the alumni relations programs here at TA!

Development Highlights

The TA community has generosity at its very core, & I'm so excited to see that value lived out every day in my role here at the development office. This year, I've coordinated several successful fundraisers during the 1 st semester for Magazine Sales, Jingle Fair, & Christmas Trees. I'd like to thank every patron who participated in these fundraisers, & especially all of the volunteers who made these events so successful & professional.

I'm most excited about the progress that we've made toward TA's Annual Giving goal of $120,000 by the end of June. As of now, we've raised almost $65,000 toward that goal! To reach our goal, we need your help. If you haven't given to TA's Annual Giving Campaigns, please consider doing so now? Every gift, large or small, adds up to our goal!

Several alumni take advantage of matching gifts from their employers. Please contact me at p_runyon@tawarriors.org if you'd like more information on whether your employer participates in this program. I'll be happy to help you with any of your giving questions.

If you'd like to contribute online, you can do so here .

E. Stuart Kitchen, TA '66, received the Alumni of the Year Award at Homecoming 2017 on September 29, 2017. The TA Alumni of the Year is selected from submitted nominations by any TA alumni to the Alumni Director. Those nominations are then sent to past recipients of the Alumni of the Year Award, whose vote determines that year's winner. The person who nominated Stuart Kitchen wrote the following letter on his behalf:

E. Stuart Kitchen, Jr. is a graduate of Tidewater Academy, Class of 1966. He graduated Lynchburg College in 1970 and joined the faculty at Tidewater Academy soon after. During his early years at Tidewater, he also coached basketball and baseball, several years alongside his high school coach Hal Nunnally.
Stuart later decided to make a career change and joined the Sussex County Sheriff's Department as a deputy. He campaigned and was elected sheriff serving the citizens of Sussex County as a highly regarded sheriff for 28 years before retiring.
Sheriff Kitchen had not only been a faculty member and coach at Tidewater, but was involved in the school as a parent for 13 years. His children, son Timothy and daughter Karen graduated in 1994 and 1995 respectively. But his continuing support of the school didn't end after his children graduated.
Following his retirement from law enforcement, Stuart once again returned to the classroom as an instructor and baseball field as a coach at his alma mater Tidewater Academy to extend his love of history and baseball to students.
Today he continues his steadfast support of the school by serving on the Board of Directors since 2014.
E. Stuart Kitchen has been involved in every phase of Tidewater Academy since its beginnings in 1964: student-athlete, instructor, coach, parent, board member, donor and fund-raiser. He has been a dedicated and staunch supporter of the school in every way, not only academics, but athletics, too. There are not many sporting events in the gym in which Mr. Kitchen is not present, sitting in his usual spot along the wall near the kitchen, or on the baseball or softball field sitting next the home dugout.

Please join me in congratulating our newest recipient of the Alumni of the Year Award, E. Stuart Kitchen!

Col. Henry Goodrich Speaks at Veteran's Day Ceremony & Lunch

Col. Henry Goodrich, Retired, TA '83, presented the keynote address at the FCA Veteran's Day Program & Lunch on November 10, 2017. Col. Goodrich spoke on his deployment to Afghanistan with the Kentucky National Guard, where he took part in a special mission to assist Afghani farmers with agricultural issues. After his presentation, which was both interesting & informative, he held a question & answer session with the Middle & Upper School students.

Col. Goodrich retired from the Virginia Army National Guard in 2017 to his farm in Surry County, where he lives with his wife Victoria, & 2 sons, Benji, TA '15, & Zach, TA '18. TA is thankful for his service to both his country, & to TA, where he's currently serving on the TA Board of Directors.

Col. Goodrich, TA '83, displayed these items on a table during his presentation. The dog tags, boots, & folded American flag honored the ones who served our country. The sickle & shovel were the only farming tools that most Afghani farmers owned, which was quite a shock to our students!

Your Input is Needed!

TA would love to hear from you! Please email Pamela Runyon at p_runyon@tawarriors.org with any changes of address, or if you have any feedback about how TA can better serve its alumni. Also, if you're in the area, please stop by the school & visit; we'd love to see you!

One initiative that we're taking here at TA is to gather information on our alumni. That information will be used by the development office to help secure funding to help future TA students. If you haven't already taken the survey, please take it here . The survey is only 11 questions, & should only take a couple minutes of your time. Thanks for your participation!
