January Meeting

Please join us at the Regular Membership Meeting of the Gladstone Park Chamber of Commerce, Friday January 5, 2018. This month's meeting will take place at Gladstone Chiropractic Group, 5316 N. Milwaukee Ave. at 8:00 am.
We will be talking about the benefits of being a chamber member and how to best take advantage of them.

New Year's Day

As part of his reform, Caesar instituted January 1 as the first day of the year, partly to honor the month's namesake: Janus, the Roman god of beginnings, whose two faces allowed him to look back into the past and forward into the future. Romans celebrated by offering sacrifices to Janus, exchanging gifts with one another, decorating their homes with laurel branches and attending raucous parties. In medieval Europe, Christian leaders temporarily replaced January 1 as the first of the year with days carrying more religious significance, such as December 25 (the anniversary of Jesus' birth) and March 25 (the Feast of the Annunciation); Pope Gregory XIII reestablished January 1 as New Year's.
Economic Development
A Midwest Kitchen

A shared kitchen concept that opened in 2010 at 5740 N. Milwaukee Ave. has evolved in recent years to include pop-up restaurants and a pickup window where cookies and coffee are sold daily to passers-by on the sidewalk.
A Midwest Kitchen operates out of a 2,000-square-foot storefront that was once part of the Gladstone Park Bakery at 5744 N. Milwaukee Ave., which has remained vacant since it closed about 10 years ago. At one time the storefront was used for customers picking up cakes, as the bakery was known for its cake decorations.
The storefront is no longer part of the bakery building, as a door connecting the two buildings has been sealed off. The bakery building was put up for sale last spring.
A Midwest Kitchen owner Chris Cox operates Butter Bella, whose cookies are sold at Whole Foods, inside the storefront. He also leases space to other baking companies, which in some instances may rent the space for only a few months.  Some of the tenants have included food truck businesses and bakeries that sell goods at farmers' markets.
Information on upcoming pop-up events, featuring various cultural cuisines, is available at amidwestkitchen.com

BUSINESS OF THE MONTH
Joe wears two hats as a member, one as the founding President of the Gladstone Park Neighborhood Association and one as a representative of BMO Harris Bank.  The Gladstone Park Neighborhood Association has its founding in a late night Facebook conversation with another Chamber member when the Milwaukee Avenue Road Diet was being considered.  Over 300 residents packed the Auditorium at St. Tarcissus to have their voices heard on this issue at the first unofficial meeting of GPNA.  Since that time, our organization has met monthly to educate residents on community issues and encourage their involvement in community issues, to create an effective line of communication among neighbors, area businesses, government agencies and elected officials, to provide and foster a social outlet among residents, to encourage the support of local businesses, and to be an advocate of the Gladstone Park community.  In addition to our meetings, we have various social events, partner with the Chamber on Thirsty Third Thursdays and support the Throwback Music Festival with volunteers and attendees.  We also give back to the community, with donations to the Chopin Plaza holiday decorations being one such example.  While membership is limited to residents within Gladstone Park, all Chamber members are invited to attend our meetings on the last Tuesday of every month at Pasta D'Arte at 7:00pm.

Joe is also a Vice President and Senior Manager of the Special Assets group of BMO Harris Bank.  While Joe does not want to be your banker considering his work with customers experiencing financial difficulties, with over 23 years at the Bank, Joe can put you in touch with any department of the Bank to help you with your personal or business banking needs.  BMO Harris Bank was established in 1882 as Harris Bank, and owned by BMO Financial Group since 1984.  BMO Harris Bank has grown to become one of the largest banks in the Midwest serving personal, commercial and affluent customers.  BMO Harris Bank provides a broad range of personal banking products and solutions through over 600 branches and approximately 1,300 ATMs in Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Minnesota, Arizona and Florida.  We focus on building relationships with a vision to be the bank that defines great customer experience - building that reputation with new customers and deepening it with existing customers.

Joe has lived in Gladstone Park since 1999 with his wife, Lenette, and four children.

Joe DiCiaula is a proud member of the Gladstone Park Chamber of Commerce and is honored to be recognized as December's business of the month!
