An Excellent Award Offer
The beginning of a new year is usually met with plans and resolutions to look ahead, further into the year and beyond. But with regards to the 2017 CPRS Awards of Excellence, we want you to look back.

Between now and the awards deadline of Feb. 26, 2018 at 11:59 p.m. ET, have a look back at the communications campaigns or projects that you and your team have executed within the last two years* and consider entering them in this year's awards program.

Support and Comfort in Times of Tragedy
More than 400 people attended the public memorial service last week at Victoria's Christ Church Cathedral for Sarah Cotton's daughters, Chloe and Aubrey.

As president of the Canadian Public Relations Society of Vancouver Island, Peggy Kulmala knows of many communications and public relations practitioners who knew Sarah, a respected member of our community of practice.

Peggy made this 'imperfect video' to explain why she chose to attend the public ceremony and to share one of the service's many messages of comfort and hope.

Our future ... take your place in it!

The Future of CPRS

Background on the initiative:

Following the release of the Elevation of Public Relations white paper authored by Dan Tisch, APR, FCPRS, the Future of CPRS Committee (FCPRSC) conducted an online survey between mid-June and mid-July to test the themes outlined in the whitepaper. More than 200 people, both members and non-members, participated in the survey.

The FCPRSC spent the summer analyzing the findings of the survey and feedback gathered from approximately 200 professionals during the 2017 National Conference discussions on #AlternativePR. The results can be found in the “What We Heard” document, and influenced the proposed Strategic Framework for CPRS.

How to get there:

  1. Review the ‘What We Heard’ document and proposed Strategic Framework that was released to the broader membership and public relations industry on Jan. 10, 2018.
  2. Provide feedback on the Strategic Framework by completing the online survey between Jan. 10 - 31, 2018.
  3. Attend the webinar for public relations professionals on Jan. 17, 2018 at 2pm ET to participate in a focused discussion on ‘What We Heard’ and the proposed Strategic Framework.

DEEP DIVE: Media Relations & P2
Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2018
5:30 to 8 p.m
Hotel Rialto, 653 Pandora Avenue

IAP2 BC invites you to its first 2018 event - Deep Dive in Victoria. Join other local P2 practitioners and those interested to dive into case studies to explore how to help the media see and understand good P2. Snacks will be provided.

Some of the things attendees can look forward to:

  1. War stories” of one’s own experiences with reporters and the media.
  2. An “elevator pitch” exercise, in which a practitioner describes to a reporter – and possibly a disinterested one, at that – just what P2 is.
  3. Brainstorming on “key messages” to help a reporter understand how to recognize good P2, as opposed to the “announce-and-defend” approach that sometimes is peddled as consultation.

Attendees will come away with some ideas and insights for working with the news media to reassure the public that their concerns and interests will be heard and addressed during a process – and have been addressed once it’s over.

Tickets are $10 for students; $15 for members; $20 for non-members. Purchase tickets by Feb. 2.

A Message from the CPRS-VI Events Director

Happy New Year!

I hope you have had an opportunity to rest over the holiday season and spend quality, un-rushed time with your families and friends.

The events team works hard to keep you connected through pro-d events and mixers. We would like to be able to show our appreciation to our speakers - and attendees - with small gifts.

This is where you come in: might you consider contributing a give-away?

Gift certificates, wine, or pens - virtually no item is too big or too small! And you'll be recognized for your support in our Annual Report!

If you are interested in contributing, please email me and I can arrange for pick up/delivery.
I wish you a prosperous 2018 and look forward to seeing you soon.

Last fall, I met a computer science major named Patricia who shared a story about one of her first college exams. She’d studied and studied—and when her professor returned the test, he told her that she’d received the highest grade in the class.
