Sermon Series

Winter Sermon Series: The Biblical Guide to Relationships
If you think that the Bible will give you examples of perfectly developed relationships with proper priorities, you will be severely disappointed. Instead, the Bible testifies to relationships that look a whole lot like ours: love and competitiveness, joy and brokenness, grief and new beginnings, loss and reconciliation. Our need to claim the grace of God for our relationships is described from cover to cover in scripture.

Sermon:  "Rewriting History"
Scripture:   Philemon 8-21

Dr. Will Cotton will preach at the 8:30 and 9:40 am worship services.  Rev. Dr. Beverly Jones  will preach at the 11 am worship service.

The Source, our weekly devotional guide, is available on the church website.

Please join us in worship this weekend...Sunday at 8:30 am (Sanctuary), 9:40 am (Family Life Center) or 11 am (Sanctuary).

United Methodist Men...cooking up some Super Bowl Chili and Tamales
The UMM will be selling their famous Super Bowl Chili and Tamales on Sunday, February 4, so stop by and purchase some on your way out of church. A 28 oz container of chili is $10. Six tamales are $6. The special is two  chilis and 12 tamales for $30. All proceeds will benefit First Church missions and ministries.

Carl Schomburg
In memory of Carl Schomburg...
Also on Sunday, February 4, the UMM will mount a plaque in memory of Carl Schomburg near the BBQ pit area adjacent to the FLC. The dedication will be after the 11am worship service. Carl was a long time UMM member and one of their chief cooks for their breakfasts, barbecues and chili preparations.

Save the date: Spring Retreat
The UMM Spring Retreat will be at Willow Point Resort on Lake Buchanan April 4-8. Annual Men's spring retreats are great getaways to do some serious fishing, playing, discussing, reflecting and eating! More details are coming soon.

Would you like to get involved in United Methodist Men?
We have two UMM groups. Both groups participate in UMM special events and activities. In addition to weekly gatherings, several times a year, they spend the weekend cooking either brisket, chicken, or chili, making cobbler, and then showing up on Sunday morning to sell them during the worship services...all of the proceeds to benefit the missions and ministries of First Church. You'll find them serving coffee and juice at the Mayor's Prayer breakfast next Thursday, making breakfast for the youth during their retreats, hot dog lunches for the preschool, taking care of our wonderful church property and more!
  • The Tuesday group gathers between 8 & 9 am at Juarez Restaurant on South Mays for food and fellowship. Contact: Rich Thompson at 512.694.6729, or Ben Watson at 512.623.0025.
  • The Wednesday group meets for breakfast and fellowship at 6:15 am on Wednesdays in the Family Life Center. Contact: Steve Oltmanns at 512.636.6299.
UMM offers food, fellowship, service and fun. Please come and join us for weekly gatherings and/or special events!

Leadership Retreat is coming up on February 3
Join us for an update from the Core Vision Team on the new directions developing for First Church, be inspired by our guest speaker, Dr. Tommy Darwin from M Group (the team providing guidance in our vision process), and celebrate the great ministries led by our leadership teams. From 1-2 pm, our administrative committees will have their first meeting of the new church year. A continental breakfast and lunch will be served. Those in leadership positions should have received an evite (please RSVP), but all are welcome to come, hear, learn and envision. Please call 512.255.3336 to let us know you are coming.
Pictorial Directories are here!
Church Directory
New Pictorial Directories are available for pickup
If you had your photo made last fall for the First Church Pictorial Directory, you may pick up your copy this Sunday in the foyer of Payne Cottage (or outside if the weather is nice). We will distribute the directories for four weeks to those who had their photos made. Directories may also be picked up in the church office on weekdays.

We will probably have a few extra directories. If you did not have your photo made but would like to have a copy of the directory, the extras will be available for a small fee in late February. We will provide more information about that at a later date.

Music Ministry
Orchestra
Make music unto the Lord! First Church Orchestra wants you!
First Church Orchestra is seeking instrumentalists from High School and up to be a part of this ministry. The orchestra provides music at the 11 am service every week, and for other special services throughout the year. No audition is required, just a passion for making music! This is an opportunity for younger musicians to grow in their skills, and for adults to have the opportunity to rekindle their love of making music. High school students can receive community service hours for their service.

If you are interested in participating or have any questions, please contact Michael Rosensteel, Director of Music, at 512.255.3336 (ext. 140) or at michael@fumc-rr.org.

Grief Support
Grief Support Group begins on 2/11
When a loved one dies we feel it in our hearts, in our thoughts and even in our bodies. The ever-changing emotions we experience can catch us off guard. Our appetite may change; our daily routines may be difficult to re-establish. We may experience distance from ourselves and others we love. It doesn't matter if the loss came suddenly or was expected. When we lose a loved one we are in new territory. Strong emotions, vivid memories and unanticipated decisions come to the fore. In such times, a strong support system can help us to navigate the journey.

A new grief group will meet on Sundays from February 11 - April 8, 5:00 - 6:30 pm. This group will include information and insights about the journey through grief as well as supportive conversation and prayer. The group will be led by Ms. Shevawn Walzel and Rev. Beverly Jones. Childcare will be provided. To register go to: http://fumc-rr.org/support. For more information, please contact a group leader, shevwalzel@austin.rr.com or beverly@fumc-rr.org.  Click here for more information and to register.
