Nature's Jewelry

Make a bracelet featuring objects found in winter

Nature's Jewelry Masking Tape Bracelet

Wrap a piece of masking tape - sticky side out - gently around your child's wrist. Go together to a nearby natural area to collect "charms" from winter and stick them to the bracelet.

Charms could include: seeds, leaves, bark, animal hair, and more!

Kids in the Kitchen!

Favorite Snack Mix
Children choose their favorite healthy snacks for between-meal treats!
Favorite Snack Mix
Directions:
1. Fill several bowls each with a different healthy snack option (such as pretzels, nuts, dried fruit, etc.)
2. Ask children to sample each type of snack and talk about which ones are their favorite and why
3. Give each child a small paper bag with their name on it
4. On each child's bag, write down their favorite snack options
5. Instruct children to use handfuls or scoops to add each of their favorite options to their bag until it is half full
6. Fold down the top of the bag a few times and tape shut
7. Allow children to gently shake their bag until the contents are mixed together
8. Save this mix for a delicious healthy snack between meals

Grown-ups: You'll want to do this activity along with your child. A recent study published in the New York Times found that simply increasing the amount of nuts in your diet can lower your cholesterol levels!

Early Learning!

New Gestures
Infants 12-18 Months

1. Show your baby a simple gesture or movement you have not seen her do. Some examples are: opening and closing fists, rubbing belly, or touching two index fingers together.

2. Begin by practicing one or two movements. At first you can guide your baby's hands to make the correct movement. Babies  may need a lot of practice for this exercise.

Variations: Combine actions with sounds for your baby to imitate; make different facial expressions or postures for your baby to copy; make this activity even more fun by telling a story or singing a song to go along with your gestures and movements.
