ANNUAL $20 VEHICLE LICENSE FEE
The City of Fife Transportation Benefit District (TBD) Board has adopted a $20 annual car tab fee that will begin collection through the State Department of Licensing on January 1, 2017.
The new $20 vehicle license fee will fund local transportation projects in Fife. Fife City Council formed a TBD in November, 2014, but the TBD had not previously established any revenue stream. The fee will collect approximately $150,000 per year. The revenue will be used to improve and maintain the City's residential streets.
"The $20 car tab fee will help the city to keep up with street maintenance which is important to the residents of Fife," City of Fife Manager Subir Mukerjee said.
Almost 90 cities and towns in Washington have formed TBD's, which are typically funded through additional sales tax or by the adoption of vehicle license fees. Tacoma, Bremerton, Everett, Lakewood, Olympia and Spokane are cities with TBDs funded through vehicle license fees. Seattle's is funded through an $80 vehicle license fee.
One of the first projects Fife's TBD is slated to fund is repaving David Court, which currently has poor road quality. Fife will collect the fee for a few years before beginning the road projects in order to save enough to fund the projects.
