35TH ANNIVERSARY TIME MACHINE
There is a wonderful preservation story at the heart of WCMS' 35-year history. While WCMS was still using shared space at McCall Middle School, a historic property in town - 407 Highland Avenue - was being threatened with demolition. The former home of actor/singer Frank Fontaine, 407 Highland had fallen into disrepair, and plans had been drawn up to tear down the existing building and subdivide the property into four house lots. The September 25, 1997 issue of the Winchester Star included an article about the proposed development along with an editorial plea to "Preserve the 'Crazy Guggenheim' home," referring to a character that Fontaine played on the Jackie Gleason Show. "With time and effort, the Fontaine Mansion could easily [be] a revitalized landmark." Within a week, the Star reported the surprise news that WCMS had purchased the building - with a lot of help from generous friends. Click below to see a few photos of what the house looked like when it was acquired. We will continue the story of the renovation in the next E-Notes!
