at Women & Children First

Dear Friends of Women & Children First,

What a mighty December we had! Day after the day, the store was bustling with holiday shoppers, checking off their gift lists with our favorite books of 2014. Beyond the cheerful crowds and booming sales, there were three other reasons why this holiday season rocked:

  1. Not only were all of W&CF's bestsellers this year written by women, but also nearly all of the end-of-year lists, including the New York Times' "10 Best Books of 2014," were dominated by female authors.
  2. In his third and final round of giving, author James Patterson selected Women & Children First to receive one of his generous grants. In the past year, Patterson has donated more than $1 million to indie bookstores across the United States, and we're delighted to be one of them!
  3. The Tribune's "Chicagoans of the Year in Literature" saluted co-owners Lynn and Sarah along with five other women who opened or bought bookstores this year.

January is going to be a quiet month at W&CF, as we wind down from the holidays and, late in the month, begin our physical renovation. The store will be closed from January 25th through February 1st. Be sure to 'Like' us on Facebook, as we'll be posting photos and updates throughout construction, and come in to check out our new look as soon as you can! We will be holding a Grand Reopening celebration, featuring live entertainment and refreshments, on Saturday, February 21st. Stay connected for more exciting details!

Wishing you all the best in the New Year!

**Please Note: This event will be held at the Swedish American Museum, located at 5211 N. Clark St.**

Join us for the paperback release of Lydia's Party,
the newest novel by local author Margaret Hawkins.  Every year, Lydia hosts a party for six of her dearest friends. Over an exquisite feast, the women share news and reveal secrets. But at this year's party, Lydia is planning to make a big announcement. As preparations for the party continue, we learn of the women's regrets, relationships, and hidden desires. What effect will Lydia's announcement make on these women and their friendships? Margaret Hawkins is the author of two previous novels, A Year of Cats and Dogs and How to Survive a Natural Disaster, as well as a memoir about her sister, After Schizophrenia: The Story of My Sister's Reawakening. She has also written for the Chicago Sun-Times and is a senior lecturer at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
