Our work at Attention Homes
Did you know...
  • January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month.
  • 1/3 of youth are recruited or approached for trafficking or exploitative transactional sex within 48 hours of being on the street.
  • Research indicates that 28% of youth on the streets engage in "survival sex" for food, shelter or money; compared to 4% of all adolescents.
  • 72% of labor trafficking cases in the United States involve children.
In 2016, Attention Homes served 14 youth survivors of sex trafficking, and 132 that had experienced some form of labor trafficking. Not one of these youth fits into what many imagine when they think about trafficking victims. These young people look and dress like their peers and look similar to every other youth in our community. The challenging reality that we all must face is that these crimes are happening right here in our own backyard. Any young person in a vulnerable position, especially living on the streets, is much more likely to become a victim of this crime. Homeless youth are approximately 7 times more likely to become victims of trafficking and those odds increase significantly when there is a history of childhood sexual abuse.

With a safe and supportive environment for young people to turn to, we cut the odds significantly. With a trained group of staff and volunteers on the streets each day, paying attention to the signs and reporting concerns, we are making a difference in youth's lives. By raising awareness, we can take away the stigma and respond as a community to prevent our youth from becoming victims

Donor Spotlight: First Presbyterian Church of Boulder
For over 16 years, Attention Homes has enjoyed a wonderful partnership with First Presbyterian Church of Boulder. Since our founding, faith communities have been the backbone of our organization and we are grateful for their support and compassion for the needs of our youth. Whether it's making monthly meals or volunteering at our shelter; granting much needed funds and most recently making Attention Homes' the beneficiary of their annual Glory of Christmas choral celebration; we are renewed by First Presbyterian's faith in our work and belief that vulnerable young people can achieve regardless of their circumstances. We are eternally grateful for their support!
Volunteer Spotlight: Marnie Williams
Marnie started working at Attention Homes in 2012 as the interim volunteer coordinator and stayed until 2015. After leaving as an employee, she still stayed connected. For the last two years Marnie has volunteered on the Street Outreach Team and also helps with our annual Sleep Out and Kaleidoscope events.

Why do you volunteer for AH?

"I believe that if we want to change the world we need to begin with our own community. Attention Homes makes a difference in our community by reaching out to those kids who need to know that they are not lost or forgotten."

Can you share a success story you've seen?
"My first experience with a trans-gendered youth was at Attention Homes and it stuck with me. When this young man first came to The Source he would barely speak to others. With staff support, he completed his education, found a job, and is now working and thriving in Boulder."
Attention Homes Apartment Project Update

  • Site review plans were submitted to the City of Boulder Planning Department for our 40-unit supporting housing community.
  • The Landmarks Board unanimously approved moving forward with the application to designate all 7 properties on the block of First United Methodist Church of Boulder as historical landmarks along with three additional requests. The discussion will continue after Site Review is complete.
  • A Community Operations Management Group made up of neighbors, concerned citizens and project team representatives met to discuss how concerns, management plans and neighborhood safety will be addressed. A working group will be formed and meet monthly to address outlined goals and objectives.

MEET OUR YOUTH:
EDUARDO

"I am currently staying at The Source. After fighting to complete High School, I started working. Home was not safe, but I never asked anybody for help. It was hard to get away; I was comfortable where I was sleeping because through the chaos, I do love my family. I decided to leave home for my own good. Now that I am out, I am doing okay. I had a goal to find a steady job; now I have reached that goal. My next goal is to find an affordable place to call home. I got my books for studies and have my loan approved for school. I found Attention Homes and the people that work here have been more supportive and excited for others' achievements than anyone I have ever met in my life. Honestly, I'd say I ended up with a pretty awesome support group."

Eduardo since has found housing and is living independently in Boulder.
MEET OUR STAFF:
MOLLY

How long have you worked here?
"I started volunteering on the Street Outreach Team at The Source in 2014. In 2016, I completed my practicum, which included volunteering at Drop-In and co-facilitating a weekly group at The Source. I was hired as staff this last December."

What is your favorite part about the job?
"Spending time with the youth. I am inspired by their strength and resilience. There are many painful stories and struggles that I hear about, but there is also an overwhelming amount of joy and humor. The humor is contagious and I love how much I laugh during my shifts."

What is something unique about you?
"I play viola and sing in the band  Holiday Blue ."
