January 2018
As we begin the new year, we are thinking about questions that should be top-of-mind for communities interested in improving their competitiveness. These are inspired by conversations that are surfacing within our client communities across the country. Collaboration and new partnerships are central themes.

We encourage you to incorporate these questions into your own interactions. For example, carve out a few minutes in your upcoming board meetings to discuss each question. Or, schedule staff meetings to consider the questions and develop one action item for each.  And don't forget, we're here to help.

Headlight Data released a  new  report  in December about the fastest growing large metros in the U.S. between 2011 and 2016. The data was featured in several news articles this past month including Forbes, Spectrum News, and KSAT 12.

Seeing so many clients make the news this month is a great start to 2018!

Among its many recent accolades, the  Indianapolis region was featured in a New York Times article about the many reasons why it made Amazon's HQ2 shortlist. It is thrilling to see the region gain such well-deserved recognition.

The Milken Institute released its annual list of Best-Performing Cities in the U.S., and we were proud to see five Avalanche clients on the list.  Provo, UT came in at #1, and Charlotte, Tampa, Atlanta, and Charleston made the top 25.

The  North Texas Commission announced its new coalition dedicated to keeping Texas business-friendly. Priorities of the coalition include opposing legislation that is discriminatory, supporting legislation that encourages investment, innovation, and job growth, and encouraging voter participation in the region.

If January is an indicator of the year to come, then we're expecting an action packed 2018! We had a productive month of visiting clients from west coast to east, and are thrilled at the optimism and energy we're sensing.

We kicked off the year with a trip to Winchester, VA, where we gathered stakeholder input, explored the town, and dove into a pulled pork breakfast platter at Bonnie Blue's. (The next time we visit, we'll wear stretch pants.)

We also traveled to California to continue our work on an Economic Recovery Plan and CEDS for Sonoma County. We are amazed at the progress local leaders have made since the October wildfires. And, in case you were wondering, Sonoma County is open for business! The best way to support their recovery efforts is to buy SoCo-made products. We've sampled more than a few ourselves, so let us know if you want recommendations.

Chris and our partners at CAEL visited the I-86 Innovation Corridor in Corning, NY, to lead conversations on the region's talent supply analysis and workforce strategy. Amy ended this month by returning to Franklin, TN, to lead  TVA Economic Development's Workforce Institute. We love working with such a talented (and all female!) group of economic development professionals.

Finally, a big CONGRATULATIONS to Mr. and Mrs. Tony DeLisi! Best wishes from the whole Avalanche team as you and Natalie begin your lives together!
