WORSHIP NEWS

Annual Meeting & Council Vote!

This year's Annual Meeting will be held on Sunday, January 28th following the 3rd service.  Annual reports will be available and the VOTE for new council members will take place.
ALL MEMBERS WELCOME!

Message from Your Church Council

As the year is coming to a close and another is not far from starting, we are in need of new council members to fill upcoming vacancies.  Among those whose terms are coming to an end are:

  • Dr. Scott Hodkiewicz, Council President
  • Dr. Matt Dahlgren, Council Treasurer
  • Lynsey Fleck, Council Vice President
  • Frank Peiler

Pete Juergens is up for re-election since he initially replaced an elected member and had the next highest number of votes. In order to continue the tradition and philosophy of Immanuel Lutheran Church, we like to have an equal balance of men and women in leadership. We will be accepting nominations (you may nominate yourself!) for 3 males and 1 female to fill the vacancies. If you are interested in serving on the church council for Immanuel, please contact the church office at  secretary@immanuellg.org or call 262-248-4211.  Nominations will be presented to the congregation at the annual meeting in January for a vote.  Join us all in thanking the out-going council members for their leadership.  We look forward to the next council's leadership and input as we grow into our future with our new Pastors!

Contact Information for the Church Council

The church council, Pastors and staff are eager to be available to you. Please don't hesitate to reach out to us for prayer needs, spiritual guidance, help, and fellowship.  We pledge to work hard with you and for you.  Contact the church office if you need a Church Directory. CONFIRMATION

CONFIRMATION IS COMING!
First Day - Wednesday, January 10th- 5:30-7:30pm

Here's how it's going to work:

Wednesdays - Ignite (Confirmation) - 5:30-7:30pm
Our regular Ignite youth group will begin to integrate Pr. Sara into the 'large group' teaching time. On the surface, Wednesdays will look and feel pretty familiar. Expect to continue to have fun, build friendships, and learn important spiritual lessons. We'll just be adding Pr. Sara into the mix.
Confirmation students, on top of Wednesday Ignite, will be expected to complete Worship reports, fulfill serving requirements, and have an experience in summer Bible camp or the Mission Trip.
We fully expect some students to participate fully on Wednesdays who are not on the 'confirmation track.' Our hope is that everyone will find Ignite to be a place where we grow in love for God and toward one another - following Jesus every step of the way!

The 'Sunday option' - 9:00-9:45 beginning January 14
We are already aware of at least 2 middle school students who will not be able to participate in Wednesday Ignite. We are able to offer a Sunday morning class from 9-9:45. This will be led by volunteers. Please understand that Wednesdays are a far more complete experience including fellowship, spiritual practices, and student leadership opportunities. For those who cannot make Wednesdays work, Sunday morning will offer at least a scaled down experience of the program.

Confirmation Day for this year's 8th graders will happen
in the fall of their 9th grade year, at the end of October.
(on Reformation Sunday, the last Sunday of October 2018)

Next fall, we will have a confirmation retreat to fulfill all requirements
in preparation for their 'Affirmation of Baptism' - i.e. Confirmation Day.
Detailed information on this will be available in September of 2018.

PARENT ORIENTATION:
Wednesday, January 10th - 6:45-7:30pm

Pr. Sara will take parents through all requirements and expectations for students on the confirmation track.

If you have questions, please contact Pr. Sara:  pastorsara@immanuellg.org  or call 262-248-4211.

REGISTER NOW - Registration forms are available in the church office.
Please fill out the form and turn into Immanuel by January 7th
*For those who will need to take the Sunday class, please write 'Sunday' at the top of the page.

Important Dates:

Sunday, January 7th - Registration forms due!
Wednesday, January 10th: 5:30-7:30pm - Joy in January Ignite Confirmation!
6:45pm - Parent Orientation
Sunday, January 14th - Ignite Confirmation 'Sunday Option'

HIGH SCHOOL NEWS

"FUEL" High School Youth Group

We're looking to have a vibrant January in FUEL. The goal is to build a community where the love of Jesus is 'the norm.' Everyone needs a community where they can count on encouragement and support. We will be doing some Bible study and having some fun to build strong friendships.
Looking ahead to February, I hope to be able to lead our FUEL students through a process where they'll end up leading all worship on a Sunday morning at Immanuel. The experience will take us deeper into scripture as we develop a 'sermon' - to proclaim the Good News for our Immanuel community.

FUEL meets every Wednesday! 5:30 PM - Dinner; 6-7:30PM - FUEL
(NO FUEL Jan. 3rd - we resume Jan. 10th)

FUEL MISSION TRIP 2018:

Where: Pine Ridge Indian Reservation - Kyle, South Dakota

When: July 21-29

Cost: $600 per student (fundraising & scholarships available)

This year we go to Oglala Lakota County (on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation), one of the most impoverished areas in the USA. The unemployment rate is around 85%, half of adults have diabetes due to poor nutrition, the suicide rate is the highest in the nation, and substance abuse is rampant.
In spite of all of this, the Oyate Teca Project remains a beacon of hope in the community. We will partner with Oyate Teca to play a key role in their gardening program, which helps people learn how to grow and preserve their own food - fresh fruits and vegetables! The Oyate Teca project is one of the most successful programs of its kind due to partnerships with people like us.
We will also explore the rich heritage and history of the Oglala Lakota people. Students can plan on spending some time in the Badlands and heading into the Black Hills.
Our 'mission' is to show our Lakota friends what the love of God is supposed to look and feel like. It's also to serve in Jesus' name, bringing important resources into an impoverished community and building friendships with people who have largely experienced alienation from the church.
Registration for the trip is open in January. Students can reserve their spot by completing the registration and waiver (Available in church office) and paying a $100 deposit.

Questions can be sent to Pr. Paul - pastorpaul@immanuellg.org

MISSION

*We are also in NEED of Clothes and Shoes donations to be disturbed at the February community meal. Please bring drop off at the church office by Feb. 12th!

Care Team

Newcomers welcome to join and be a part of this amazing team!  This is an important time for us to share and communicate about the shut-in members we are caring for.  Please contact Kristin Larkin at 414-491-1969 or email her
at  kristinlarkin@yahoo.com  for more info.  Also, if you have names of members who have indicated they would be in need of a visit from the Care Team please let Kristin or Bethany know and they will be added to the list of people enjoying visits from this wonderful ministry.

"Stitchin' for Kids"

The Wednesday morning quilters have a special project in the works.  They will be making fleece blankets for the children who come to The Tree House (Children's Advocacy Center, Elkhorn) due to suspected physical or sexual abuse and/or neglect.  Age range is anywhere from a couple weeks old to 17 years of age.  This can be a traumatic experience for these precious souls and the Tree House staff has found that if they are able to give them a "Lovie" when they arrive, or leave, it helps calm and sooth the children while the process is taking place.   If you would like to help with this worthwhile endeavor, many hands make the project go quickly besides the fact that it's fun!  Contact Jackie Kuehl for more information.   Another way to be involved is to give a monetary donation to help offset the cost of each blanket ($20 per blanket).  Donations can be placed in an envelope with "Stitching for Kids" on the outside and left with Bethany in the church office.  If you prefer to write a check, make it out to Immanuel Lutheran Church and put "Stitchin' for Kids" on the memo line.   The Wednesday morning quilters plan to have this as an ongoing project.  Last year 300+ children were served at the Tree House...that is a lot of blankets. Thank you for whatever you can do to be of assistance to these children.

HEARTS TO CARE

*STAY TUNED....the HEARTS TO CARE ministry team is working diligently to get this ministry organized and anticipates that we will soon have Hearts to Care up and running.  To our wonderful volunteers - thank you!  We will be in touch with you soon for a brief training session.

God has given each of you some special abilities; be sure to use them to help others...   1st Peter 4:10-11

Side By Side Screening

Side By Side screening is on the 3rd Tuesday of each month, January 16th at 7pm at the First Congregational UCC Church, 715 Wisconsin Street, Lake Geneva. Funds are available for rental assistance and utilities - for those living in the Lake Geneva - Genoa City Badger High School District.  Bring a copy of the bill. Side By Side is a collaborative ministry between area churches and civic groups.

St. Vincent De Paul (Milwaukee) Soup Kitchen

Our next service date is February 18th. A Carpool leaves Immanuel at 4pm. As a result of the over 70 bags of clothing Immanuel gave to the Soup Kitchen last year, we filled them up. We were told that Immanuel gives the best clothes but no more are needed now. Many thanks to Rich and Lynn for those clothes from their rummage sale, however, warm sweaters, jackets, scarves, and toiletries (small sizes) are needed. Also sleeping bags are desperately needed as there are homeless people there. We hope that many of you who wished to serve can do so. We were overwhelmed with the number of "guests" that came last time and the few of us there to serve them. Your participation in this ministry is greatly appreciated, especially from those served who tell us "may God bless you". God's Blessings, Bob Rosenthal

Blood Pressure Checks

Blood pressure checks are here at Immanuel after the 1st service on the 3rd Sunday of each month in the Library off of the Fellowship Hall.

+     As a volunteer of Hearts to Care, My 8 weekly visits to Helen Teegen are now over as she is spending the winter with her son in Arizona.  Helen and her daughter, Britta, expressed such gratitude and pleasure from my reading and card playing and just visiting.  For me, it was a wonderful experience helping an elderly shut-in rekindle her love for books and cards and just having the opportunity to brighten someone else's day.  Sincerely Vena Bodine

+          Wishing you Joy all around this Christmas!
