January Seasonal Checklist

The following are a list of activities to consider for your January gardening:
  • Vegetables and Herbs
  • Add 2 to 3 inches of organic compost to the garden to improve moisture retention in sandy soils.  We have a great selection of 2016 seeds.
This month is the time to start seeds in their transplant trays indoors.
January is also the time to set out onion transplants.  Here is a great online resource for helping gardeners to choose the best vegetable varieties for specific Texas counties or regions.  Vegetable Variety Selector
  • Perennials & Annuals
  • Add color to your garden with cool weather annuals such as cyclamen, pansies, violas, alyssum, ornamental cabbage and snapdragons.
  • PANSIES
Fertilize established flower beds with manure, compost and/or a slow-release fertilizer.  Water new plants in with a fertilizer solution or a fish emulsion  & seaweed mix.
  • Trees, Shrubs & Vines
  • Winter is the time for pruning deciduous trees, shrubs and woody vines.  (with the exception of those that bloom in the spring) Use sharp pruners and read up on proper pruning techniques.  This is a great time to plant woody ornamentals.  Container-grown plants should be planted now also.  The sooner you plant, the longer the plant has to establish roots before the arrival of hot weather.
  • Fruits & Nut
  • To protect your fruit trees from pests, apply dormant oil before new growth emerges.  Now is also the perfect time to plant citrus.....lemons, limes, oranges, and grapefruits!
  • Lawns
  • Having a problem with weeds?  Spread a half inch of compost over your lawn to help deter weeds and to feed your lawn.  According to the "Texas Gardener" if your lawn suffered from Take All Patch, spread peat moss and water it in well to help deter the disease.
  • GREEN UP YOUR LAWN!
