Recap of Chinese Cuisine Cooking Contest

|
On November 14th, ACA and the Confucius Institute at Wayne State University (CI-WSU) held the 7th Chinese Cuisine Cooking contest at Central Alliance Church in Detroit. The CI-WSU team won first place, the ACA team won second, the Westland senior apartment won third, and the Schoolcraft Community College team won fourth.

Recap of Volunteer Appreciation Banquet |

On Nov. 18th, 100 people gathered at the Chinese Community Center for the annual Volunteer Appreciation Banquet, where ACA formally expressed gratitude to everyone who had volunteered with the organization over the last year.
There was a banquet feast as well as an award presentation period. Five volunteers were presented with the President's Volunteer Service Award, a distinguished honor bestowed to those with at least 100 hours of volunteer service in a year.
We thank all volunteers for your service in the last year. You help make ACA and the Asian American community a better place!

On December 2nd, ACA joined in the Christmas festivities of Midtown Detroit's 45th annual Noel Night by setting up a Chinese calligraphy booth and passing out custom-designed bookmarks to event-goers. With its Detroit Service Center located at the heart of the event area, ACA was especially proud to participate in this event, promote Chinese culture, and wish all metro-Detroiters a very happy holidays! Recap of 34th Annual High School Achievement Award Banquet
|

On December 3rd, ACA held its 34th annual High School Achievement Award Banquet at the Chinese Community Center, celebrating the achievements of 42 outstanding Asian American high school seniors. Nine students were awarded scholarships by ACA, and the Detroit Chinese Engineer Association awarded 6 scholarships.
Keynote speaker NBC Asian America journalist and U-M Asian Pacific American Studies lecturer Frances Kai-Hwa
Wang delivered a special message for the students and their families about embracing one's roots in the APA community, knowing one's family background, and striving for success.

Recap of APA-Y Youth Leadership Program

|
Sponsored by OCA-National, ACA hosted the APA-Y program for the Detroit area on Dec. 9. 22 middle and high school students participated in the training event, where they learned leadership skills and discussed Asian Pacific American history and identity. On Nov. 9, ACA participated in the
MCN Tobacco Reduction Annual Summit as a member of the Michigan Multicultural Network and representative of the Asian American community. Community Health Program Manager Kaikai Chen presented on ACA's tobacco-related work. To read more,

On Dec. 11, Eleana Loy led a senior health workshop in Clinton Township entitled
"New Medicare Card and Home Injury Control." 19 seniors participated and learned about healthy living and navigating the healthcare system. For a full recap,

ACA will be holding FOUR special events to celebrate the New Year. We invite people of all backgrounds, organizations, and businesses to join us in joyously ushering in the New Year. Lunar New Year Open House at Detroit Service Center
Thur., Feb. 15 11:00am-1:30pm
ACA will provide free New Year lunch, open to community residents. Visitors or those who work in Detroit are welcome to join. Also invite your friends to experience New Year vibes. No admission cost but registration needed.
Lunar New Year Party at Canton Summit Center
Fri., Feb. 16 10:00am to 12:30pm
ACA Canton Summit Center will hold a tea party to celebrate Chinese New Year with friends from all walks of life in the community.
Lunar New Year Banquet at the Golden Harvest Restaurant in Warren
Sat., Feb. 17 5:00pm
The evening will include an authentic, 10-course gourmet Chinese dinner, entertainment and performances, an airline ticket auction for U.S. domestic and round-trip tickets to Asia, and a prize raffle. New board members will also be sworn in officially. Price for ACA members: $35; General Admission: $40; Patron: $100; Table of ten: $350; Community/non-profit organizations: $500/table; Corporate sponsorship: $750/table.
Lantern Community Exposition at the Chinese Community Center
Sat., Feb. 24 11:00am-3:00pm
ACA will hold a grand Lantern Festival Community Exposition which will feature fun New Year games, New Year couplets writing, New Year handcrafting and face-painting, and food and snacks making. Admission is FREE. Come here with your family for a joyful New Year weekend filled with delicious food and amazing performances! Contact ACA if you would like to set up a table for this event, food and handicrafts preferred ($35 for business or individuals, $25 for non-profit organizations).

Jingdezhen Porcelain Lectures
In cooperation with the U-M Confucius Institute, ACA will be hosting two special presentations by visiting scholar and director of the Jingdezhen Institute of Archaeology, Jiang Jianxin. Specific details to follow.

ACA is organizing a special, round-island trip to the beautiful island of Taiwan from April 23-May 5.
