President's Message

The BPCIA board has been busy setting up events for the upcoming year.  The first meeting of the year will be our quarterly luncheon on February 21st with Congressman Dan Lipinski speaking.  Our Annual Meeting and Election of Officers has been scheduled for April 4th, and we're working on a Referral Program for recruiting new members.

In December 2016 Jeff Hobson of Lapham-Hickey Steel decided to hang up his hat and retire after serving on the BPCIA board since 1990.  We congratulate him on his retirement, and wish him all the best.

We're proud to welcome our newest board member from Lapham-Hickey Steel, John Malnar. John is the Corporate Safety Manager for Lapham-Hickey Steel, has been with the company since 2015. Starting as the Safety Manager for the Bedford Park location, he moved into corporate role in January 2016. He has a master's degree in education and has spent time teaching in High School and at Moraine Valley Community College. John lives with his wife Nancy and their two boys in Orland Park. In his spare time, John enjoys watching sports, playing sports with his kids, cooking and playing poker.

I look forward to a prosperous New Year!

Congressman Dan Lipinski to speak at Luncheon
Congressman Dan Lipinski will speak at the BPCIA Quarterly Luncheon on February 21st at the Holiday Inn Chicago Midway.   Congressman Lipinski is a proud native and Representative of Illinois' Third Congressional District.  The district includes large parts of south and southwest Chicago, as well as several suburban communities in west and southwest Cook County.

Congressman Lipinski is helping to lead the effort to revitalize American manufacturing, which is a critical source of good jobs for the middle class and which is essential to our ability to independently provide for the defense of our nation.  His National Manufacturing Strategy Act is now law and he has supported numerous bills aimed at increasing the competitiveness of American manufacturing.    The Congressman will speak to economic issues that affect the business community, and give updates regarding the many transportation projects progressing in the region.

Area around Midway ready for retail takeoff - 65th & Cicero
The retail landscape near Midway Airport is starting to look up. A number of developments are breaking ground along Cicero Avenue, hoping to give people on the road to Chicago's No. 2 airport a reason to stay, shop or dine. The catalyst may be Vib Chicago, an $8 million boutique hotel set to rise on the 1.1-acre site of a long-closed rental car facility at the southeast corner of Cicero and 65th Street, across from the Midway Hotel Center and just a few blocks south of the airport. The three-story, 74-room hotel is part of a new urban boutique offering from Best Western.  Meanwhile, Lou Malnati's purchased a 16,000-square-foot former used car lot near the hotel development, with plans to open a 5,000-square-foot, full-service pizza restaurant by spring 2017. The chain adds about four locations a year, and had been scouting the Midway area for some time before settling on what it hopes will be a hot corner.  Panda Express is building a drive-through restaurant expected to open later this year. .
Get ready, burger fanatics: Culver's is coming!  The Wisconsin-based franchise known for its frozen custard and ButterBurgers is opening its first locations in Chicago, and one is planned for a plot of land near Midway International Airport. The city's Department of Planning approved the franchise to open a 4,000-square-foot restaurant at 6411 S. Cicero Ave.
The work outside Midway coincides with a $248 million renovation of the South Side airport. The plan includes more parking, a concessions upgrade and expansion, and a widening of the pedestrian bridge over Cicero Avenue to alleviate security line bottlenecks. Work on the project will begin this year and is expected to run through 2019, according to Chicago Department of Aviation spokesman Owen Kilmer.
