Chamber to Receive $200,000 in Support from the City
Funds to be used for Economic Development
The Healdsburg City Council has agreed to contract with the Healdsburg Chamber of Commerce for economic development services for the fiscal year 2014-15. The $200,000 contract is funded from the cent sales tax that the City Council enacted and which started to be collected in April of 2013, and must be spent in areas that will generate economic development for the community.
In past years the Chamber has been funded for economic development services by the City through the redevelopment agency. This funding which has been used to successfully promote the existing lodging, restaurant, retail businesses to visitors, and to offer business assistance to existing and new businesses, was eliminated by the State of California in 2012.
Funding from this contract will allow continued promotion of Healdsburg as a destination. It will also allow the continuation of our work in the area of business development and business retention.
The Chamber staff and Board will also be using this year to look at ways that the Chamber can continue working in the area of economic development, by developing programs that are self funded and sustaining. An example of this is the expansion of the Downtown Business District to better reflect the actual businesses that make up the downtown. The original DBD boundaries were drawn in 1987 and have not been updated since. The downtown has changed dramatically in 27 years and the redrawing of the boundaries and a recalculation of the assessments from the participating businesses should generate sufficient income to allow for the successful promotion of the DBD without financial support from the City. Additionally the Healdsburg in-town lodging properties are collecting a 2% occupancy tax that is being used for promotion through the Healdsburg Tourism Improvement District.
We all recognize that Healdsburg is a special place. We all also realize that we need to continue to promote our existing business, while encouraging the development of new businesses and continued economic diversity. The continuing challenge will be funding.

Business Builder Series
Last year we launched our Business Builder series to provide our members with business training classes taught by professionals. The program was a huge success with 7 workshops presented to over 115 attendees.
In a recent membership survey it was confirmed, the Business Builder workshops were relevant and valuable to those who attended; AND more Business Builder workshops in 2014 were requested in the areas of marketing, social media marketing and technology training. Stay tuned for more to classes in 2014.
"Thanks to the Healdsburg Chamber of Commerce for a great Business Builder Workshop with Jan Mettler of Boss Dog Marketing. We immediately implemented some of Jan's strategies and have realized increased results. The material was clearly presented, relatable, and useful. Please keep up the great workshop series! We'll be sure to attend some of your future offerings."
- Carla Jeffries, Director of Business Operations, Thumbprint Cellars
"We found the Business Builder workshops to be a valuable addition to our ongoing commitment to excellence. Highly recommended for any business that wants to stay on the cutting edge."
