A New Year’s Resolution for you… Be in the Know
If you want to be in the know about Healdsburg, then you should attend Good Morning Healdsburg a monthly meeting cosponsored by the City of Healdsburg and the Healdsburg Chamber of Commerce. These meetings are an up close and personal look at what is happening with some of the major institutions in Healdsburg. Get current updates from City Councilman David Hagele, City Manager David Mickaelian, Healdsburg General Hospital, the various city department heads and of course the Chamber. This meeting gives you an opportunity to ask questions and get answers in a comfortable setting without the formality of microphones or time limits. The meetings are at 8 am on the first Thursday of each month. The meetings are held at the Foss Creek Community Center Library (1557 Healdsburg Avenue) and everyone is welcome. Our next Good Morning Healdsburg meeting is February 1 at 8:00 am. If you have questions about construction projects, hospital budgets, new development projects, hotels, affordable housing or anything else going on in Healdsburg you should be there. If you have an idea you want to have vetted bring it to the meeting. This is a great way to meet local business people and well worth getting up early to attend.
Sonoma County Fire Recovery & Business Outreach Program
Message from Ben Stone of the Sonoma County Economic Development Board
Local businesses are an important asset to the Sonoma County economy, and I would like to thank you for choosing to operate your business here. As the community rebuilds in the aftermath of the recent North Bay fires, the Economic Development Board (EDB) is working to ensure that local firms still have all of the resources they need to thrive.

As part of this effort, the EDB staff is conducting a series of business outreach visits. We are interested in learning more about your business, discussing your short and long-term needs, and identifying ways we can help you succeed. A visit would only take approximately 30 minutes, while providing you with information about the following resources available to you:

  • Funding to offset fire-related losses
  • Workforce training opportunities
  • Tax incentives; and
  • Permit and regulatory guidance

Ethan Brown, the EDB’s Business Retention Program Manager, is available to meet with you to discuss immediate and long-term needs. Should this service be of interest, please feel free to contact him at (707) 565-7589 or ethan.brown@sonoma-county.org.

Sincerely,

Ben Stone, Executive Director
Sonoma County Economic Development Board

A Message From Mayor Brigette Mansell
1.   For every $100 spent, $45 stays in the local economy vs. for every $100 spent in a big box retailer, only $15 goes back into the local economy
2.   Local businesses are more likely to use local banks, media to advertise and other services
3.   Supporting local businesses contributes to a community's character and economic diversity - one of a kind retailers are part of the distinctive character of a community that buck the trend of homogenized big-box stores
4.   Local businesses are more accountable to their own communities. They are generally owned by people who live in the community and are more invested in the communities future
5.   Supporting local businesses is good for the environment. Locally owned businesses can make more locally owned purchases, requiring less transportation of goods
6.   Smaller local businesses are the largest employer nationally and in our communities, provide the most jobs to residents
7.   Locally owned enterprises generate more tax revenue for cities, with less cost
8.   A marketplace of tens of thousands of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and low prices over the long term. A multitude of small businesses, each selecting products based NOT on a national sales plan but on their own interests and the needs of local customers - guarantee a broader range of product choices
9.   Local business encourage local prosperity overall
10.   You feel good (by supporting local businesses) because in essence, you are supporting your friends and neighbors vs. some sort of anonymous company

Small local business IS big business

How Did the Healdsburg Chamber Promote Healdsburg Post Fires and Pre Holidays?
At the Chamber we recognized that it would take extra promotional efforts to bring business back to Healdsburg after the fires and to also promote Holiday shopping and dining this season. We undertook an active campaign to get Healdsburg back top of mind with visitors and locals alike. We are also laying the groundwork for continued focus on the businesses in Healdsburg during 2018. Look for a brief survey that will help us to better understand the needs of the diverse businesses here. Will Seppi has volunteered to chair the Chamber Marketing and Promotion Committee and to take a long range look at promotions, special events and uses for social media. Please let us hear from you, and answer the survey, when you receive it.

Youth Friendly Business
WHAT IS THE YOUTH FRIENDLY BUSINESS PROGRAM?

The Youth Friendly Business Recognition Program (YFB) recognizes, promotes, and expresses gratitude to businesses in Sonoma County identified as providing outstanding customer service towards youth and young adults under age 25, and for helping them in the community.

The program honors businesses that:

1. Treat youth customers with respect
2. Support community/school activities for youth and/or
3. Hire and prepare youth for future careers

Businesses must demonstrate excellence in at least one of the three criteria to receive the designation.

HOW DO I NOMINATE A BUSINESS?

Nominations are accepted year round and can be made by any community member for any business. Businesses receiving two or more nominations (including one from someone under age 25) are eligible for the Youth Friendly designation.

Nominations may be completed via electronic or hard copy form. The form asks nominators to identify youth friendly characteristics and provide examples. The YFB Committee meets quarterly to review nominations and make Youth Friendly designations. If additional information is needed to make a determination, YFB Committee members contact business nominees.
