January Agency Spotlight:
Cancer Association of Shelby County
|
Most, if not all of us have had family and friends who fought battles with cancer. Some were lucky enough to win the battle, some weren't. Try to imagine not only dealing with the most devastating diagnosis you or your loved one could face, but also facing financial hardship at the same time. Unable to pay your bills, get to treatments, possibly facing the struggle with no insurance.
Fortunately for Shelby County, these cancer patients have a place they can turn to, the Cancer Association of Shelby County. Here Donna Harrell and her team will do everything in their power to lessen the burden these patients are bearing. In 2017, the Cancer Association spent roughly $106,000 aiding 83 cancer patients with one or more services each. These services included gas for 522 trips to cancer treatments and doctor visits, paying for 112 chemo and/or radiation treatments, food cards, paying for prescription drugs, equipment, and in-home care. They also paid 43 months of health insurance premiums for their patients and helped with rent, house payments and utility payments.
Our SCUFFY funding provides just over 26% of the Cancer Association's budget, and none of this would be possible without your generous donations. You, the donor, are our most important asset. Thank you, from SCUFFY, from our Cancer Association, and from the many patients they were able to help.

Cancer Bash
According to Donna Harrell, the 2017 Cancer Bash was the best event they have had to date, with 250 people in attendance and raising over $18,000.00. Like all of our agencies, the Cancer Association does a great deal of fundraising to support their annual budgets. Thank you to everyone who supported the 2017 Cancer Bash.

Aaron is the Chief Financial Officer of Shelby Materials, his family's locally owned business that started in 1951. Aaron was a board member of the Shelby Community Health Center and currently serves on the SCUFFY Board of Directors. Eric Glasco is an attorney at McNeely Stephenson. Eric and his wife Lauren (Rees) were both born and raised in Shelbyville. Eric’s involvement with SCUFFY began after law school, and he finds this work important because of his own previous experiences with some of the agencies that are supported by SCUFFY, such as Boy Scouts and the Boys and Girls Club. Eric enjoys being active in the community, where he currently serves on the SCUFFY board of directors, the Planned Giving Committee for Major Hospital Foundation, and
