AN EVENING OF JAZZ
WITH KATHY KOSINS
Friday, January 24 - 7:00 pm

Kathy Kosins

The Harwood is thrilled to continue its jazz programming with vocalist Kathy Kosins' "Ladies of Cool Presentation." Jazz fans will not want to miss this unique homage to the "West Coast Cool" artistry of jazz vocalists Anita O'Day, June Christy, Chris Connor and Julie London.  Kosins will also perform selected repertoire from the Great American Songbook.   She will be joined onstage by John Rangel, New Mexico's premier jazz pianist.

ASCAP award-winning Kosins, known for a luscious voice wrapped in buttery sensuality, has entranced jazz fans around the world.   Raised in Detroit in the era of Motown, Kosins began performing and arranging for producer Don Was in the 1980s.  She quickly became one of the nation's most sought-after session singers, touring with Was as a lead vocalist.   In 1996 Kosins launched her successful debut album, "All in a Dream's Work" (Schoolkids), featuring a collection of nine originals and a cover of the Miles Davis composition "Four." Kosins followed that success with "Mood Swings" (Chiaroscuro), an album that expanded Kosins' profile on the national stage. Her 2006 release, "Vintage," (Mahogany Jazz), captures little known songbook tunes placed alongside a few widely known, yet unexpected tunes from outside the jazz tradition. In March 2012 Kosins released "To the Ladies of Cool," her debut CD with Resonance Records, to wide critical acclaim.  More information about Kosins is available at this link.

Members of the Harwood Jazz Society will enjoy early admission for best seat selection, and a post-concert reception with the performers.

FROM THE DIRECTOR
Susan Longhenry

Dear Friends,

Happy New Year!  Think that January is a quiet month?  Not at the Harwood!  We're kicking off 2014 with a dynamic array of exhibitions, programs and special events. I'm particularly excited about what promises to be a fantastic evening with jazz vocalist Kathy Kosins, our second annual Art of Wine fundraising event, and the final month of the exhibitions celebrating the Harwood's 90th anniversary.

This month we also debut new pricing for the Harwood's films.  In an effort to make our terrific film programming as accessible as possible, and given our commitment to engaging Taos' community, we've reduced film prices to $6 for Alliance Members and $8 for nonmembers.  This month we're featuring two fascinating documentaries - one focusing on the creator of the Calvin & Hobbes comic strip, the other exploring artist Robert Cremean (and the changes in film-making over the past few decades).

I wish each and every one of you a happy, successful and rewarding New Year.  And, of course, a year full of art!

Warm Regards,

Susan Longhenry

IN THE ARTHUR BELL AUDITORIUM

FILM:
DEAR MR. WATTERSON
Friday, January 10 - 7:00 pm
Calvin & Hobbes
Calvin & Hobbes
dominated the Sunday comics in thousands of newspapers for over ten years, having a profound effect on millions of readers across the globe. When the strip's creator, Bill Watterson, retired the strip on New Year's Eve in 1995, devoted readers everywhere felt the void left by the departure of Calvin, Hobbes, and Watterson's other cast of characters.  Now, more than a decade since the end of the Calvin & Hobbes era, Bill Watterson lives a very private life outside of Cleveland, Ohio. Despite his quiet lifestyle, Mr. Watterson is remembered and appreciated daily by fans who still enjoy his amazing collection of work.  This film is not a quest to find Bill Watterson, or to invade his privacy. It is, instead, an exploration of how Watterson's "simple' comic strip made such an impact on so many readers, and why it still means so much to us today.

FILM: THEN AND NOW: THE WORK OF ROBERT CREMEAN
Friday, January 17 - 7:00 pm

Robert Cremean.
The Harwood is honored to present Jim and Patti Day's documentary film exploring artist Robert Cremean, whose installations have been shown at numerous museums in the United States and Europe. In 1996 Patti Day produced Metaphor and Process, the result of a two-year project.  In 2013 Jim and Patti Day reconnected with the artist to make a second documentary using contemporary video technology.   The new documentary, Metaphor and Process Continuum, was created in two months. Both films document Cremean's art, his artistic process, and his occasionally controversial ideas.   A panel discussion following the film will address both Cremean's work and the evolution of video technology.  Panelists will include film producers Jim and Patti Day; Louis Moya, Chair of UNM-Taos' Media Arts program; and Jeremy McDonnell, Chair of UNM-Taos' Art Department.
