Message from the President

Michael W. Halloran, CFP, AEP, ChFC, CLU
NAIFA-Jacksonville President

Our new year starts off with a great program featuring some of the top new Reps in the area. You will be sure to get several ideas that you can use in your practice.

We just received word that the Depart of Insurance Regulation has approved Continuing Education (CE) credit for coming to our meetings. There will be two hours of CE credit given for attending four meetings. So, you will not only get some great information that you can use with your clients, but get CE credit too.

We have some openings in our committees and need your help. If you have an area that you would like to work on, please see Cherri or one of our directors.

The purpose of NAIFA-Jacksonville is to promote your growth in your Practice. We will have parts of the meeting devoted to that each month.

Please remember that our meeting are not a place to recruit or to look for a new position.

Please bring one of your friends to this great panel so they can see how we can do a better job in helping our clients.

Irma cancels NAIFA Annual Meeting FROM THE ADVISOR TODAY BLOG:

Irma cancels NAIFA's P+P Conference, but look for highlights of what could have been, on NAIFA.org

Dear NAIFA Members,

I had hoped and expected to be in Orlando today, meeting with many of you at NAIFA's 2017 Performance + Purpose conference. As you know, Hurricane Irma forced us to cancel the event, and we now turn our attention to those who have or will be impacted by Irma and by Hurricane Harvey.

Many members of our NAIFA family live and work in the paths of these devastating storms, and I would like to urge you to contribute to the NAIFA Hurricane Relief Fund. The fund will help your colleagues, fellow insurance and financial advisors, who suffered hurricane-related losses. More information on the fund and how to donate is available HERE.

I know many of you are disappointed, as am I, that we were unable to get together this year for P+P. NAIFA volunteers and staff had planned an excellent program. While it's impossible for us to recreate the P+P experience online, we would like to give you a small taste of what we had in store. Keep an eye out next week for an email announcing Performance + Purpose Virtual: an online sampling of P+P content. For more information, please watch this short video by NAIFA CEO Kevin Mayeux.

Best regards,

Keith Gillies, CFP, CLU, ChFC
2017 Performance + Purpose Conference Chair

NAIFA Diversity Task Force NAIFA Diversity Task Force Emphasizes Diversity & Inclusion

NAIFA members are our most valuable assets. The collective sum of the individual differences, life experiences, knowledge, inventiveness, innovation, self-expression, unique capabilities and talent that our members possess and invest in their work represents a significant part of not only NAIFA's culture, but our reputation as an organization.

NAIFA embraces and encourages our members' differences in age, color, disability, ethnicity, family or marital status, gender identity or expression, language, national origin, physical and mental ability, political affiliation, race, religion, sexual orientation, socio economic status and other characteristics that make our members unique.

NAIFA 20/20 Strategic Plan

Advancing diversity and inclusion in the insurance and financial services industry is at the forefront of NAIFA's vision for the future, and a key component of the NAIFA 20/20 Strategic Plan. The Diversity and Inclusion initiative supports NAIFA 20/20's goal to empower members by broadening diversity, bolstering advocacy, developing top-notch training programs and increasing public awareness.

As an organization, NAIFA seeks to create a more diverse population of agents who are better equipped to serve a diverse population. Inclusion enhances an organization's ability to achieve better business results by engaging people from diverse backgrounds and perspectives. That is the overall goal of the Diversity Task Force. NAIFA Government Relations Wins and Accomplishments Through August 2011 LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

NAIFA Submits Comments To SEC On Advisor Standards Of Conduct

NAIFA has responded to a request by the Securities and Exchange Commission for information on standards of conduct for investment advisors and broker-dealers by submitting a detailed comment letter.

In the letter, NAIFA encouraged the SEC to take the lead in developing and implementing "reasonable, effective, and harmonized standards and compliance requirements" for advisors and for other agencies, such as the Department of Labor, to work with the SEC.

NAIFA recommends that the SEC develop a principles-based "best-interest" regime that:
  • Defines and imposes a best interest standard of conduct that puts clients' interests above firms' and advisors' interests when investment recommendations are given, and allows for the sale/recommendation of diverse products under compensation arrangements that make sense for lower and middle-market investors;
  • Contains clear disclosure obligations, including disclosure of all material conflicts of interest, types of compensation involved, and the best interest standard to which the advisor must adhere;
  • Prohibits misleading statements to investors;
  • Ensures that overall compensation for financial professionals is reasonable; and
  • Utilizes existing federal enforcement mechanisms, rather than the private plaintiffs' bar and state courts to enforce and interpret the new regime.

IFAPAC
GOVERNMENT ADVOCACY

NAIFA's Mission Aided with PAC and PIC

The core mission of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors is advocacy. There is a common misconception that NAIFA membership dues include all the dollars needed to fund our national and state advocacy efforts. The fact is that NAIFA spends over 25% of its 12 million dollar annual budget to pay for lobbyists and programs to support our advocacy efforts. However, additional funds are needed to help gain access to our elected representatives. The source of these funds are from the Insurance and Financial Advisors Political Action Committee (IFAPAC).

IFAPAC's goal is to help the associations advance the legislative and regulatory interests of the members of NAIFA. While any U.S. citizen can contribute to IFAPAC, only members of NAIFA may be solicited to do so. Contributions must be voluntary. Contributions are not tax deductible for federal income tax purposes. Of approximately 4,600 political action committees registered with the Federal Election Commission, IFAPAC ranks in the top tier. IFAPAC is the largest insurance PAC in the country. In the last election cycle, the national IFAPAC contributed approximately $1.8 million to federal candidates and committees.

For Three Easy Ways to Contribute to IFAPAC, please click HERE. To contribute online, please visit www.naifa.org/advocacy/IFAPAC.

APIC
Insurance and Financial Advisors Political Involvement Committee (IFAPIC)

Our business is based on building relationships. The world of politics is no different. One of NAIFA's greatest strengths is that we have membership representation in each Congressional District in the country.

It is vitally important that we know which of our members know elected officials and how well they know them. Please click on the link below and complete the legislative contact form:
