Your participation makes a difference!

Since distributing NAIFA's Diversity & Inclusion survey, we've increased the demographic data of our membership three-fold in the area of ethnic identity and gathered even more information in the areas of age and gender than we had before. However, we still have a long way to go and your participation makes a difference!

Please take a few moments to access your Diversity & Inclusion survey by clicking HERE.

With your support and participation NAIFA can be a more inclusive organization, poised and capable of serving the needs of all our members.

with The Guardian

May is Disability Insurance Awareness Month, a time when the insurance industry comes together to do something about the enormous gap that exists between Americans' need for disability insurance and the actual coverage they have. Disability insurance is the most overlooked of the major types of insurance. That's likely because many people think a disabling illness or injury will never happen to them. But according to a Life Happens survey, a person has a three in 10 chance of suffering a disabling illness or injury that would keep them out of work for three months or more during their career.

For more information about the DIAM awareness campaign from Life Happens with tools and resources to promote Disability Insurance, please click HERE.

Special Thanks to The Guardian for sponsoring our May 25th Membership Lunch Meeting!

Margie Harner Call for Nominations!

Submitted by Margie Harner
Nominations Chair and Immediate Past President

Our elections for the Board occur in June, and that will be here faster than we can imagine! It's not too early to consider a position with our NAIFA-Jacksonville Board of Executives.

Nominations are an on-going search. If you've ever considered the prestige of serving on the Board of a Professional Association, perhaps here is an opportunity for you.

The position requires just a few hours of your time, attendance at our monthly Board Meetings, and, depending on your duties, it may require attendance at State annual meetings. What you will learn and glean from the experience is invaluable.

We are searching for fresh ideas and people. This is YOUR Association and we desperately want your input. It is an honor to be a part of this wonderful organization, and it will really look good on your bio or resume!

For questions, please contact Margie Harner, 904-296-2500 or  [email protected], or please feel free to contact any of our Board Members for input or information.

Robin Wahby NAIFA-JACKSONVILLE MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

This month we will feature

Robin Wahby, CLU

Wahby Financial Group LLC
482 Jacksonville Drive, Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250
904.372.9997
  1. Robin's Favorite thing about Jacksonville - The People for sure! Specifically, the business owner community is smart and engaging and is made up of a lot of great men and women which is nice to see. My best friends are here in Jacksonville.
  2. In the Super bowl spirit, no lie, I wanted to be Lynn Swann when I grew up. I would watch him on TV and he would just fly through the air! I guess it's a "Robin" thing and an active imagination. I also wanted to be a marine biologist or archaeologist.
  3. My passion for going into this great business of ours was to change my future. My boss said if you work the first 5 years like most people won't, then you can live the rest of your life like most people can't. I was hooked! If I can help people protect their families and build my business then life is good.
  4. Challenges that I face today are still the same: ME. I compete against myself and my values and constant balance of life and family. I am always trying to be a better version of myself.
  5. The words that I hear often that describe me are "direct and gets right to the point".
  6. I am not a highly automated systems thinker, and thus you just hit on my weakness. An app that I am excited about trying is "taxbot" that I heard about from a NAIFA webinar!
  7. Easy tip - make one extra phone call or contact each day.
  8. I work for myself to help others achieve their accumulation and protection goals.
  9. I attribute my success to hard work and the habits I was able to follow from other established agents in our industry.
  10. I enjoy having the vision for the families or business owners that want to build a foundation for future financial security and next generations of children and grandchildren.
  11. A fun fact that probably most people don't know about me is that I used to bartend in the Vince Lombardi room at RFK stadium in Washington, DC. Needless to say, I met some pretty interesting people including John Riggins and Joe Theisman. The owner of the Redskins back then was a real trip too!!!
  12. My New York Life Office in Northern Virginia introduced me to NAIFA 26 years ago. I have been a member ever since.
  13. I am a member of NAIFA because we need to have one central organization to represent and fight for our values and our livelihoods while we are all hard at work.
  14. A piece of advice I would give to a young new advisor is don't be afraid to fail. There is no such thing as failing as long as you learn from it. It shows you are thinking and taking chances.

Watch the New NAIFA Take 3 Video Now!

NAIFA Take 3 Video

Dear NAIFA member,

The Senate later this week is likely to consider H.J. Res. 66, a bill that would prevent the Department of Labor from exempting state-run retirement plans from worker protections under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA). These protections apply to private market plans, and there is no compelling reason they should not equally apply to retirement plans offered by state governments.

A new NAIFA Take 3 video provides an overview of this important issue.

In it, NAIFA Vice President of Government Relations Gary Sanders explains:
  1. That access to retirement plans is not an issue. A wide variety of plans are available on the private market that can accommodate the needs of anyone preparing for retirement.
  2. A similar law preventing ERISA exemptions for city-run retirement plans has already passed Congress and the president has signed it into law.
  3. It is important for the Senate to pass H.J. Res. 66 to ensure any state-run retirement plans provide the same worker protections as city-run and private-market plans.
NAIFA has been a very active advocate on this issue for NAIFA members and your clients. We have sent letters to all 535 lawmakers and activated a grassroots campaign to engage with decision makers. NAIFA key contacts have made personal phone calls to important congressional offices, while NAIFA representatives have met with members of Congress and their staffs.

We believe that these coordinated efforts will result in another NAIFA success story, protecting your business and the clients you serve.

Best regards,

Kevin M. Mayeux, CAE
NAIFA Chief Executive Officer

IFAPAC
GOVERNMENT ADVOCACY

NAIFA's Mission Aided with PAC and PIC

The core mission of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors is advocacy. There is a common misconception that NAIFA membership dues include all the dollars needed to fund our national and state advocacy efforts. The fact is that NAIFA spends over 25% of its 12 million dollar annual budget to pay for lobbyists and programs to support our advocacy efforts. However, additional funds are needed to help gain access to our elected representatives. The source of these funds are from the Insurance and Financial Advisors Political Action Committee (IFAPAC).

IFAPAC's goal is to help the associations advance the legislative and regulatory interests of the members of NAIFA. While any U.S. citizen can contribute to IFAPAC, only members of NAIFA may be solicited to do so. Contributions must be voluntary. Contributions are not tax deductible for federal income tax purposes. Of approximately 4,600 political action committees registered with the Federal Election Commission, IFAPAC ranks in the top tier. IFAPAC is the largest insurance PAC in the country. In the last election cycle, the national IFAPAC contributed approximately $1.8 million to federal candidates and committees.

For Three Easy Ways to Contribute to IFAPAC, please click HERE. To contribute online, please visit www.naifa.org/advocacy/IFAPAC.

APIC
Insurance and Financial Advisors Political Involvement Committee (IFAPIC)

Our business is based on building relationships. The world of politics is no different. One of NAIFA's greatest strengths is that we have membership representation in each Congressional District in the country.

It is vitally important that we know which of our members know elected officials and how well they know them. Please click on the link below and complete the legislative contact form:
