Message from the President

Michael W. Halloran, CFP, AEP, ChFC, CLU
NAIFA-Jacksonville President

Have you ever approached an attorney for the purpose of getting her to be a Center of Influence for you? The attorney is probably hoping that you will be a Center of Referrals for them. Does it work that you will give one to her and then get one from her?

You will find that answer at our meeting on November 16th. Bill O'Leary, one of our members, has been a practicing attorney for several years in the Business and Estate Planning areas. He will be at our meeting to go over that question and many others.

I personally do not get a lot of referrals from my attorney clients, but when they occur the case is usually a large one that is also fun to work on. You will also find out what the attorney expects from us when we are working with them on a case.

One of the many reasons to attend our meeting is that you are now getting Continuing Education (CE) credit for attending.

When you are working on a case that is important to you, the commission is needed, do you want competition on it? A number of times it has been mentioned to me that a competitor was trying to open a case with one of my clients. When the client told the competitor that I was their agent, the other rep backed off and told them I do a good job for my clients. The reason that happened was the fact that we became friends at NAIFA Meetings. Paying dues and getting a benefit like that is really nice.

If you have been watching the news it is apparent that the President and Congress are working on a tax cut. Your dues help support a legislative effort to keep 401k benefits unchanged. NAIFA is also working to keep the inside build-up of cash value non-taxed. We get great value from our dues, please help us recruit some new members.

Our focus this year is to give sales ideas at each meeting an you will get that from Bill and other speakers.

NAIFA-Jacksonville Anytime you have suggestions to make our group better, please give them to one of your officers or directors.

NAIFA Advisor Today FROM ADVISOR TODAY:

Get Ready for Long Term Care Awareness Month!

November is Long Term Care Awareness Month, the month-long campaign aimed at educating Americans about the importance of owning long-term-care insurance (LTCI). This is an excellent opportunity for you to reach out to your clients and prospects about LTCI and expand your LTCI practice.

Ahead of this campaign, Genworth has released results from an omnibus poll that measured consumer sentiment and understanding of LTCI.

The poll, which surveyed 1,200 adults between July and September, is a follow-up to the Cost of Care report, and uncovered several misperceptions about who pays for LTC costs, confusion between government programs like Medicare and Medicaid, and a lack of awareness about what is and what isn't covered.

Specific findings include:
  • 62 percent of respondents incorrectly defined what LTCI covers.
  • Two-out-of-three adults expect government programs to partially or fully cover the costs of their LTC services, but 45 percent of respondents either confused Medicare for Medicaid or admitted they didn't know the difference between the two programs.
  • Only one-in-five adults have taken any action to financing their LTC expenses.
  • Generation X is the most fearful about not having money for long-term care, but is the least likely to have prepared for these expenses.
  • Millennials are most likely to have taken action towards paying for future LTC expenses, which may be tied to another finding revealed in the study - that they are the most likely not to expect the government to cover any part of their LTC services.

The call to action, then, is to underscore the fact that there is not a single solution to funding one's long-term care, Genworth notes. Because of that, individuals must take on more responsibility to learn about the topic and plan accordingly.

NAIFA Government Relations Wins and Accomplishments Through August 2011
LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

DOL Delays Fiduciary Rule

FROM THE NAIFA BLOG: NOVEMBER 2, 2017

Statement from NAIFA CEO Kevin Mayeux, CAE:

"The Department of Labor today filed its rule with the Office of Management and Budget to delay the applicability date of the fiduciary rule by 18 months, which is a step in the right direction.

"NAIFA has worked diligently throughout this process to educate the administration and members of Congress about the rule's potential unintended consequences that could deprive middle-market savers of access to professional, individualized advice. We will remain vigilant to assure the DOL rule does not disrupt the marketplace, increase costs for retirement savers, and eliminate access for middle- and lower-income workers to individualized retirement planning services.

"NAIFA members are on the front lines in communities across the United States serving the individuals, families and small businesses the rule is likely to impact the hardest. NAIFA, ACLI and our coalition industry leaders will continue to inform lawmakers on the impact the rule is having on the industry and consumers. We look forward to working with the Department of Labor and Congress to ensure advisors are able to serve their clients and guide them to secure financial futures."

IFAPAC
GOVERNMENT ADVOCACY

NAIFA's Mission Aided with PAC and PIC

The core mission of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors is advocacy. There is a common misconception that NAIFA membership dues include all the dollars needed to fund our national and state advocacy efforts. The fact is that NAIFA spends over 25% of its 12 million dollar annual budget to pay for lobbyists and programs to support our advocacy efforts. However, additional funds are needed to help gain access to our elected representatives. The source of these funds are from the Insurance and Financial Advisors Political Action Committee (IFAPAC).

IFAPAC's goal is to help the associations advance the legislative and regulatory interests of the members of NAIFA. While any U.S. citizen can contribute to IFAPAC, only members of NAIFA may be solicited to do so. Contributions must be voluntary. Contributions are not tax deductible for federal income tax purposes. Of approximately 4,600 political action committees registered with the Federal Election Commission, IFAPAC ranks in the top tier. IFAPAC is the largest insurance PAC in the country. In the last election cycle, the national IFAPAC contributed approximately $1.8 million to federal candidates and committees.

APIC
Insurance and Financial Advisors Political Involvement Committee (IFAPIC)

Our business is based on building relationships. The world of politics is no different. One of NAIFA's greatest strengths is that we have membership representation in each Congressional District in the country.

It is vitally important that we know which of our members know elected officials and how well they know them. Please click on the link below and complete the legislative contact form:
